Happy Memorial Day. As we relax today, let us all take time to reflect and give thanks to all those who have given the ultimate sacrifice to our country over these past almost 250 years.
My Dad was drafted into WWII and served in the Philippines during the war and then in post war Germany in the Medical Corps. He ended up serving twenty years and retired as a colonel. He came home.
But a close friend of mine lost his father in the Battle of the Bulge during WWII when my friend was a toddler leaving his mother a widow with two babies. His father was just in his twenties.
So many have given so much for the freedom we enjoy. Let's make sure we all work to ensure our democracy continues. Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We must all do our part, not just during wartime, to make sure this great American experiment continues for future generations.
Amen. Let's all stand up to the plate
ReplyDeleteFreedom isn't FREE - may we always remember & GOD BLESS AMERICA!
ReplyDeleteWonderful post, Beth. We have so much to thank them for.
ReplyDeleteI had an uncle who also fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He drove a tank and his tank broke down in a little village in France, I believe. He had to stay there until he received replacement parts. The French were very kind to him, but I'm sure they were happy to see any allies. He was quite the character. He made himself mayor of the town, and declared everyone a US citizen. Ha ha. He was one of the lucky ones who returned home, but he was never the same person.
Thank you so much for observing this annual moment in our year. Each Memorial Day I wonder why we don't join as a nation in some sort of visual commemoration, similar to the British who wear poppies for Remembrance Day. Seems to be a symbolic gesture that transcends politics and would be a moment for the nation to come together to remember our fallen soldiers. ps-Our local veterans suggest wishing a 'peaceful Memorial Day,' rather than a happy one, given the solemnity of the occasion.
ReplyDeleteDemocracy is worth fighting for.
ReplyDeleteWell said, Beth, & thank you for your patriotic thoughts. God Bless our troops, where ever they may be.
ReplyDeleteI always appreciate the sacrifices of those who risk their lives and give their lives protecting us all. Let’s hope for peace.
ReplyDeleteMeanwhile - that Slim Aaron’s pic you posted to get us in a “start of summer” mood is one that has frustrated me continuously. Would you believe my HomeGoods had it available and nicely framed for $500 a couple of months ago? My husband said, “NO!” But I kept stalking it and twice it was snatched away literally right in front of my very eyes. People do return expensive things like that if they discover they don’t work after all. It just wasn’t meant to be….THIS time!
Hear-hear! πΊπ²ππΊπ²
