The Classic Mule

Mules - Metropolitan Museum of Art - early 18th century

The mule, a backless shoe, dates back to the Romans where it was worn by the higher magistrates. It was also de riguer in the French court in the eighteenth century with the likes of Marie Antoinette and Madame de Pompadour. In more modern times it was reserved for the boudoir.

In recent years, it has been all over the runways and the streets. It is easy, effortless, comfortable, stylish, and very chic. More elevated than a sandal, it has the ease of a slip on that can go to the office, on a walk, to the pool, and out to dinner.

I love mules and was so excited when I learned a few days ago that my go - to Rothy's were dropping a line of mules. These are an even comfier version of the most comfortable shoes in my closet.

The Almond Demi Mule in Black

Polished in the front, casual in the back. The almond-toe mule features a roomy upper and an open back for easy-on, easy-off style that’s perfect for workday to weekend wear.

The Almond Demi has a roomier fit than The Point & The Flat.

Cushy insoles provide arch support for exceptional comfort.

Like all Rothy's, they are eco - friendly made from recycled plastic bottles and are fully machine washable.

They are available in Black, Navy, Cedar, Melon, and Vanilla Bean. I am thinking of getting it in the classic black to go with everything.

This roomier, more supportive Almond style is also available in the cutest loafer. It comes in a dozen colors, and I especially like it in the twill shown here.

Almond Loafer in Twill

I really love it in this this Ruby Grapefruit Twill.

And use this code for $20 off your first order. If you have a wider foot or need more arch support, both these Almond styles are the perfect choice.

  1. I think mules are tres chic, and I read in a recent Wall Street Journal article that classic clothes such as polos and pearls are making a bit of a comeback with younger people. Everything old is new again.

    1. I ordered them yesterday. In preppy circles polos and pearls will never be out of style.
