Mules - Metropolitan Museum of Art - early 18th century |
The mule, a backless shoe, dates back to the Romans where it was worn by the higher magistrates. It was also de riguer in the French court in the eighteenth century with the likes of Marie Antoinette and Madame de Pompadour. In more modern times it was reserved for the boudoir.
In recent years, it has been all over the runways and the streets. It is easy, effortless, comfortable, stylish, and very chic. More elevated than a sandal, it has the ease of a slip on that can go to the office, on a walk, to the pool, and out to dinner.
I love mules and was so excited when I learned a few days ago that my go - to Rothy's were dropping a line of mules. These are an even comfier version of the most comfortable shoes in my closet.

I think mules are tres chic, and I read in a recent Wall Street Journal article that classic clothes such as polos and pearls are making a bit of a comeback with younger people. Everything old is new again.
ReplyDeleteI ordered them yesterday. In preppy circles polos and pearls will never be out of style.
