Spring Caftans

Frances Valentine

Caftans, also spelled kaftans, were originally worn by men. Cut from airy material to sit off the body, it is one of the most comfortable things you can don in tropical climates. Long associated with Palm Beach and Florida, the caftan is as comfortable as sweat pants, but with elegance and sophistication.

Caftans are thought to have originated in ancient Mesopotamia and were worn in India, Africa, and Iran by sultans and high ranking officials (men) from the 14th to 18th century. Caftans became the rage in the sixties worn by women like Jackie Kennedy, Elizabeth Taylor, Grace Kelly, and Vogue editor Diana Vreeland.

I love caftans and they have become a mainstay of my wardrobe here in Florida. Comfortable and chic, they can be dressed up or down and getting dressed is so effortless. Add a pair of sandals and statement jewelry and you are good to go.

My go-to source is Frances Valentine and their new Spring line has many vintage retro inspired caftans. What many will appreciate is that these caftans are not voluminous. They are cut slimmer or are belted, so while still very comfortable, they are also very flattering. I wore a couple of their caftans this weekend and they never fail to get compliments. Here are some favorites from the new collection.

I am off to a watercolor class at the yacht club this afternoon. Sounds very Florida and fun doesn't it?

    1. The fabric on the loveseat is Swans Island Daffodil Yellow by Madcap Cottage. All of the fabric on this image are their designs and the photoshoot was done at their private home, House of Bedlam.

  2. I don't wear caftans but FV is my gold standard for everything cool and fun. If I had to pick one place for all my clothing, shoes and accessories FV would be it.
