Tropical Find @ HomeGoods

Alfredo Parades - House Beautiful

I posted this picture last year in a piece about decorating with seashells for Christmas. These vintage seashell planters with hollies decorated the back porch of this Shelter Island, New York home of interior designer Alfredo Parades for the holidays. Vintage seashell decor has become highly collectable and very pricey. I have always loved seashells and now I live in one of the best areas in the world for collecting them.

I have been skulking around looking for a pair of seashell planters for CCC since then with no luck. Imagine my delight when I happened upon these at HomeGoods yesterday. Since hollies are not Florida friendly, I will likely use Eugenia topiaries in them in the entrance to CCC for the Christmas holidays.

I have already started planning my Christmas decorating - I have decided to go with a chinoiserie meets Palm Beach style and have started sourcing and collecting things. The seashell planters will work perfectly. I also have on my list a new artificial Christmas tree and am waiting for all the big box stores to open their Christmas areas. I need a taller tree with my high ceilings here. I plan to post on my hunt for an artificial Christmas tree.

Here is a sneak peek - a fabulous coral glitter tree topper (no longer available) I snagged at Pottery Barn at the end of last season.

  1. If you want a very high quality tree, check out Balsam Hill. Huge variety and beautiful. You can even buy a kit with samples of the different style branches.

    1. I have read great reviews, but I would prefer seeing the trees in person.

    2. Ditto! We purchased a tree from Balsam Hill a few years ago and were amazed at the quality. We've always had a real tree, but this artificial tree looks like the real deal and without the mess. Highly recommend Balsam Hill for anyone wanting a quality artificial tree.

  2. My in-laws in Jacksonville have a huge holly bush, but it does get cooler there than where you are.

  3. Can’t wait to see all your treasures! Be sure to check out coastal flow on south tamiami, a friend of mine sells beautiful garlands and trinkets made of shells and beads there. Bon Bon Vintage had ginger jar ornaments last year and the last time I was in I noticed they had gotten some every day chinoiserie items. I love that store so much! They sell Julie Vos jewelry as well.
    Happy hunting 😊

  6. You really scored with those sea shell planters. They are stunning. I like seeing merchandise too, before I make a purchase, and when I buy online, I always check the merchant's return policy before buying.

My one complaint about most of the Christmas lights that are out there now, whether you have an artificial tree that is pre-lit, or whether you buy Christmas lights independently, is that they all seem to be LED's, which emanate a very glaring type of light, which I find extremely unappealing. They look especially bad in a photograph.

    1. Easy solution for the LED Christmas lights - make sure they are warm white - they are much closer to incandescent.

  7. I recommend Balsam Hill as well. I love our tree and it is so easy to collapse and store it.
