Photography & Chinoiserie

Norman Parkinson

This photo is by famed fashion photographer Norman Parkinson of French model Katherine Pastrie in a Bernard Devaux hat, circa 1960, in Queen magazine. I love everything about this. I collect vintage and antique hats and have a wonderful collection of Schiaparelli, Christian Dior, Bes-Ben, and many others. They really are works of art.

But I digress. I have really gotten into decorating my home with framed photographs. I am finding more interior designers are combining chinoiserie and photographs by iconic photographers. It's a perfect juxtaposition and can add whatever look you are going for - glamorous, whimsical, sophisticated, playful, modern, or vintage.

I especially recommend looking at Slim Aarons and Gray Malin, two of my favorites. Here is some inspiration.

Alessandra Branca - Massimo Listri

Chairish - Slim Aarons

Amanda Lindroth - Slim Aarons

Kara Miller Interiors - John Dominos - Look Magazine

Susan Bednar Long - Luxe Magazine - Matthew Pillsbury

Danielle Rollins - Louise Dahl-Wolfe

One Kings Lane - Gray Malin

David Jimenez

Barclay Butera

CCC - Slim Aarons

A new original piece of art I had framed by Framebridge is being delivered today and my hanging guy will be over on Monday to hang a Slim Aarons, the Louise Dahl-Wolfe, and a few other pieces. Pictures coming soon.

  1. Wow! The last picture of CCC looks really great with the picture hung there. It's all come together so nicely, hasn't it? What a thrilling room to be in/walk through.

  3. Scrolling through, I arrive at the last image and think to myself, "That's lovely, which designer is this?" And see it's CCC with the sweet flamingos! Wonderful, Beth, just wonderful. It presents such a beautiful perspective on your space.

  5. I absolutely love that picture of Katherine. She really does look like a "pastry", doesn't she?

  6. Beth, do you mind sharing your sources for your photography art? I did a search for the Katherine Pastrie photograph, but came up empty handed. Maybe it's just not a photo that is currently available anywhere.
