A Unique Color Palette

Meg Braff - Hamptons Cottages & Gardens

A colorful chinoiserie dining room in a Southampton getaway by Meg Braff. The wallpaper is Quadrille's Lyford Trellis. The coral Indochine dining chairs are from Red Egg. The iron chandelier is from Ironware International, but I can't say I like it. It looks like it has been run over.

This is certainly a unique color palette - she calls it coral, ochre, and chocolate. Meg says this dining room is used more in the winter when one can't eat outside, so she chose a cozy color palette.

Meg calls the wall color ochre. I would say it's mustard yellow, so I checked, and the colorway on the Quadrille website is called Mustard Cream. "Ochre" is a yellow with orange in it, not brown like this. I think a room in mustard yellow is definitely an acquired taste. But coral, ochre, and chocolate sounds much prettier than orange, mustard yellow, and brown - LOL.

This is a favorite wallpaper of mine, and comes in beautiful colorways. I would have selected a different one, but I am not a yellow person, and yellow is not flattering to the vast majority of complexions in fashion or in a room.

Since this is a beach house, I think one of the blue colorways would be a beautiful choice. Here is an example with a similar color palette.

  1. I’m with you - not a fan of the color palette. I also don’t like tableclothes in general and this one brings too much coral to the mix IMO. I like the chairs tho!

    1. I love a beautiful skirted table, but this is not well done at all, I agree.

  2. I don't like the Meg Braff room because, like you, I'm not a fan of mustard yellow. There's an overdose of lattice work and the colors aren't harmonious. The coral is nice, but the tablecloth is too much. The John Fontas vignette is perfection. I wonder what the whole room looks like with the lattice wallpaper on the ceiling.

  3. There's a reason why brown and yellow color palates have never been popular...bring on the blue and coral!

  4. I'm not wild about the color palette either, and I actually hate brown. Of course wood furniture, unless painted is always brown, but brown always seems like a very tired color to me. Softer yellows I like. Buttercream, for example. A friend of mine once painted her dining room what I would call a Van Gogh yellow, and it just looked smashing.

    1. I hate brown too including brown furniture. I love cream - the exterior of my house is cream.

  5. The pagoda lamps with the orange shades in the John Fontas room are gorgeous.

  6. As my mother used to say when confronted by something she didn't like, "Oh, dear". Elements are fine but color palette is just wrong. Why???

    1. I think sometimes interior designers try to be different.

  7. I love mustard yellow as an accent color when paired with brighter colors. Love all the aspects of this room, just not together. Reminds me of the 70s color palettes... everything competes and nothing stands out, gets muddy.

    1. I agree - and not a fan of muddy colors at all. They seem dated and tired.

  8. If you put on a blindfold and threw a dart at the color wheel, any color/shade/tint the dart landed on would be a better choice than that Grey Poupon mustard color.

    1. Exactly - out of all the colorways in that wonderful wallpaper, it is the worst.

  9. The wallpaper should have been in green or blue, not yellow.

  12. Love the wall paper but not that color. The color of the chairs are great but I would do without the table cloth.

    1. I concur with all your points. It's an odd room.

  13. Love, love, love the coral. Tablecloth over-doses the shade.
