The Chinoiserie Living Room

Ruthie Sommers

A very pretty and dramatic living room by Ruthie Sommers with Gracie chinoiserie wallpaper in "Antique Peony," a curved pink velvet sofa, ruffle trimmed curtains (very Miles Redd), striped slipper chairs, and a real statement rug. Not sure about the "coffee table" choice here, but I like the bold mixing of patterns - go bold or go home.

  1. I don't like all the elements separately but the room really seems to work. I would kill for the pink sofa. I'm conflicted abut the ruffle but the drapes would need something against the Gracie wallpaper. This is out of left field but I have a dining room in my ex-husband's house that I am trying to finish. It has Gracie wallpaper in a matte gold pattern I think called Oasis or Serendipity. Could you have a feature where subscribers post a room and ask for suggestions?

  2. This is interesting combination. I have to say, I love the bold rug. I do like the chairs, but I'm not so fond of the rest of the room. I guess I feel the opposite of Jana. I actually do like some of the elements on their own, but not all together. I do agree with you on the "coffee table" though. It doesn't seem to serve much purpose.

    1. I found it intriguing. I have mixed feelings about it. The rug and chairs together bother me.

  3. I really do like that rug. I have a very, I guess I would use the word imposing, house. Not in a pretentious way, but it's large, the rooms are large and sort of stately, it's old and very solidly built. Consequently it needs furnishings that can step up to the plate. Do you happen to know what the rug is, and who makes it?

    1. I don't know about the rug, but I like that it is such a statement.

  5. I am with you on the curvy pink sofa.

How is the mattress search going? I need a new one too.

    1. I love the sofa too. I got distracted with redoing my entire garden and need to circle back on the mattress. Will keep you posted.

    2. We just bought a mattress from amerisleep and my husband and I have fewer aches and pains in the morning and are sleeping so well!
You order based on your sleeping position-I recommend giving them a look.

    3. I will - I need to choose one for the generic house guest since it is for the guest bedroom.

  6. I'm not enthusiastic about this room. I like the pieces individually, especially the pink sofa, but I don't like them all in the same room. I feel the rug, the chairs, and the sofa are each fighting to be the star of the show.

  7. I love the rug, the sofa and the desk but it just isn’t coming together for me as a whole. The wallpaper is a bit too “grandmillenial” if that’s the correct expression. Ruthie Sommers can usually do no wrong in my eyes but this room is definitely not indicative of her usual style.
