I agree so completely with this. I surround myself with beautiful things and could not live in a home without them. I enjoy remembering where they came from, the homes and rooms they have lived in, and I enjoy caring for them - I even like polishing silver. I read that surrounding yourself with beautiful things releases endorphins. Do you feel the same?
I have a feeling very few minimalists follow Chinoiserie Chic - LOL.
Agree totally,I am surrounded by stories, memories and beauty.
ReplyDeleteAny time someone tells me, “less is more,” I think, “not to me!”
DeleteCount me in. Memories live in objects. And Bunny is always right!
ReplyDeleteMost of the objects in my home have great significance to me, memories of travels, people, or just because I love the piece. If it doesn't have a story, it doesn't live in my house.
ReplyDeleteBeth, I'm a minimalist who loves beautiful old things, chintz, brown furniture, magazines and books showing beautiful homes and gardens, and your blog.
ReplyDeleteYou are so right. Awhile back one of my neighbors said to me "You have a serious problem and we need to do an intervention." I asked which serious problem. She said "You are a Wedgwood hoarder."
ReplyDeleteOMG, this is so funny! Thanks for the laugh.
DeleteWe are moving soon and I took photos of all of the things I really did not want to live without bc they make my home look interesting. Most of the pieces are antique and include collections I have accumulated over the years. Love your blog!
ReplyDeleteI, too, surround myself with beautiful objects and furniture which tell a story. Those minimalist rooms lack soul and the wonderful stories of how beautiful objects came to live with me.
ReplyDeleteLove this quote by Bunny Williams. I also love to collect and look at beautiful things, but I also like the calmness and serenity of not being visually overwhelmed. I never truly recognized this in myself until I worked at a resort spa where the ambience is completely devoted to serenity. What an amazing effect that has on one's mental and psychological well being.
ReplyDeleteI am fortunate enough to have a large house and garden where I can move things around and indulge my desire for both visual calmness and visual stimulation.
We refer to the furniture and other things as Aunt Minnie's, or Great Granny Green's, or whomever's sofa, china, vase, etc. A couple who wanted to buy our previous house said it had a "voodoo vibe," and they just couldn't. Even though it was a new custom built house, it knew it was created to protect and preserve generations of love and beauty represented by these lovely objects.
ReplyDeleteME TOO! pamela
ReplyDeleteI totally agree. It brings me great pleasure and a quiet joy to look around my home and have my eyes fall on beautiful things. I am an unapologetic maximalist. Color, pattern, and form rock my world.
