The Chinoiserie Bathroom

de Gournay

This bathroom has lovely de Gournay chinoiserie wallpaper and at first glance beautiful styling. But on closer inspection, I do find a few elements a bit troubling. First, I can't deal with toothbrushes out on display. Second, bar soap is only attractive when it's brand new and unused like here, but after that, not so much. And lastly, the fabric shades on the sconces would be more appropriate in a powder room. You can see from the reflection in the mirror that this is a bathroom with a shower just across. This whole thing feels kind of germy - LOL.

  1. Germy, maybe. Those sconces and the mirror, though. 💕💕💕 The tile is gorgeous, too.

  2. One more thing - how would you clean the counter without eventually ruining the wallpaper? Why no backsplash?

    1. I take long hot showers and this is hand painted silk that costs a fortune. No thanks.

  4. Great points about the bathroom. Do you think the decorator/designer was more concerned about the looks of the room, rather than the practicality, or maybe the client insisted upon these things? From looking at the toothbrushes on the counter, this is a bathroom that is used on a daily basis, not one that is used occasionally. Where does one store their toothbrushes? I have a relatively small bathroom, and always put mine in the top drawer.

    1. How does one not splash on hand painted silk wallpaper brushing teeth and washing up with no backsplash? Bizarre. I have always kept my toothbrush in my medicine cabinet.

  5. Glass or lucite (museum quality, virtually undetectable) backsplash panels are often used over wallpaper around sinks. I don't see it here but they should have installed it. Any other backsplash really wouldn't work because it would interfere with the mirror as shown.

  6. Generally I keep my toothbrushes out (for "airing") unless the bathroom is being shown if there is company, or more recently, for a real estate photo shoot. Inn this case, they should have stashed theirs away for the shot.
