The Chinoiserie Bathroom

Cecil Hannah Gurney - Architectural Digest

This bathroom is amazing - chinoiserie, pink, and flamingos - WOW. As I said yesterday, she is the de Gournay daughter and director. Not for the minimalist, but I don't know what you guys are doing on my blog anyway - LOL. She glazed the paper in the shower area for those of you who are going to freak out over the paper in the bath area. Her father advised her it was much cheaper than marble. Especially for them. I love the terrazzo and pink marble as well. Why oh why is the toilet lid up for a photo shoot?

  1. It could be a bidet instead of a toilet. I have flamingos and cranes in my home and paper walls in every bath! I have always LOVED wallpaper! Thank you for the bright and colorful photos today!

I went to HG for the first rime this weekend and came home with two two+ ft tall golden pagodas. I will have to go more often! Thank you for the suggestion.

    1. Then leave the corner of the bidet out of the photo. I hope I find gold pagodas at my HG! Sounds fabulous.

    2. It’s definitely not a bidet and is up against the wall. Intrigued by the bedroom beyond.

  2. LOVE it, so much fun. The terrazzo and pink marble are my favorite part. Delicious! I love the wallpaper too, but probably wouldn't have used it exactly as shown. Something about the flamingos being cut off by the round mirrors feels off. But that's really nit-picking and not seeing the forest for the trees in an otherwise amazing bathroom. Hey, at least I'm admitting it.

I have had wallpaper in my guest bathrooms for the last 17 years. No problems, no peeling. It's not glazed either nor do I have a window there. What I do have is a really good exhaust ceiling fan which does the trick of reducing humidity and any moisture that might accumulate otherwise. I also wipe surfaces right away as SOP in any bathroom.

    1. I have had wallpaper in bathrooms for decades with no issues at all. I actually love the mirrors and sconces - they are fun - not sure how else they would have done it.

    2. I love the mirrors and sconces too— its just unfortunate how the wallpaper was placed behind them so the flamingos get cut off in a haphazard way. It would bug me...Id have to figure it out better.

    2. I am so glad you said that, Beth!! Maybe because I spent too much time on the NYC subway, I detest subway tile!!

  4. Swoon!!! Elegant and fun. These photos are making me want wallpaper desperately. I had to go back to look for the toilet!! LOL! You are a hawk eye!! :) But totally agree - put the lid down. Cathy in CT (I can't seem to get my comments to come up with my name)

  5. I agree with BBDL...not a toilet though probably a bidet as this room is in London. Beautifully done and I really like that the nonfunctioning fireplace creates a bit of a niche. Very unique.

    1. I lived in Europe and have seen many bidets and have never seen a bidet there with a seat on it ever. And if it is a bidet, leave it out of the photo.

  6. OMG, what a fun bathroom! Love your comment about what minimalists are doing on your blog, Beth. HA HA. I must be blind, but I am not seeing a toilet in either of these pictures. (Where the devil is it?)

    2. I have always been perplexed about the whole seat up/seat down thing. Why is it so difficult?

We always keep it down in our household. It looks better and everyone using the potty is equally engaged in lifting it and putting it down.

      What am I missing?
