The Wine Fridge

Decorpad

In my current house there is a wet bar under the double staircase with a wine fridge. I really like having all the whites, pinks, and sparkling wines pre-chilled and not taking up space in the refrigerator. There is no wine fridge in my new home but there is a perfect spot for one in an existing cabinet just to the right of the refrigerator.

Have any of you installed an under counter wine fridge in your kitchen in a cabinet? It seems like an easy job for my handyman. Take off the doors and cut out to measure. There is an outlet on that wall he just needs to drop. I can use the upper cabinets for wine glasses. Any tips on installation, brands, etc. would be great. Here is a photo of the spot I am talking about.

And that ceiling fan is going away. It looks bizarre in the kitchen. I was going to Lowe's today to pick up that Harbor Breeze palm ceiling fan for my lanai. I should have gotten it before my post. After I posted on it, the post got a ton of hits and the fan sold out at every Lowe's and online. Hopefully they will restock. Lesson learned. Buy first, post second. LOL

And thanks for the great cocktail suggestions yesterday. They were fantastic. I am making a Total Wine run today and will get the needed ingredients. This will be fun!!!! Here is one I can't wait to try - the Pink Flamingo with rum, fresh lime juice, and pink grapefruit soda. And it's pink and green.

  1. You need these cocktail napkins to go with your Pink Flamingo cocktails:

  2. That is a funny story about the ceiling fan - you caused a stampede. Hopefully, they will restock soon.

  3. That shows you how many people read your blog, Beth.

I personally have never installed an under-the-counter wine fridge, or anything, for that matter, so I cannot offer any advice from that perspective, but I do have one, along with a small under-the-counter fridge w/ice maker in the wet bar in my Sun Room. They are nice to have. There are lots of choices out there, so you want to do some research and know exactly what works for you.

    1. You are correct, lots of options out there. My handyman is a retired engineer, so he is great with this stuff.

  4. A wine fridge will be perfect there! I don’t know if you mentioned painting the cabinets, if so what color? So exciting! Love a re-do!

    1. No, I am keeping the kitchen as is at least for now, but putting in my beautiful Platner table, Chinese Chippendale dining chairs, Chinese Chippendale bar stools, lots of blue and white Chinese porcelain, and a great new chandelier from Ballard Designs.

    2. Looking forward to seeing the chandelier.

  5. I have a GE Monogram that I have been very happy with. I would choose the largest capacity that will fit. They fill up fast, especially if you buy cases of wine. It looks better installed than a freestanding unit in my opinion.

  6. I was wondering about whether you were painting the cabinets and saw above that you weren't. Cutting into cabinetry would be easier if you were so that any oopsies or filler kind of material needed for the fridge to fit the space could be addressed. It might be easier, too, if you dedicated the whole cabinet run to be wine/special beverage storage for the same reason. As for brands, as above research will needed but the easiest might be to assess what you have now.Do you like it? Then why not replicate what you know?

Thinking outside the original idea, I would take a serious look at reconfiguring the fridge/freezer. Do you like the ice/water in the door? (I hated mine and couldn't wait to get rid of it!) Could you move the freezer to the garage? If so, you could look at tall wine storage in that area and no cabinetry issues would have to be involved. What Ballard chandy is coming home to your kitchen? Don't reveal if you haven't purchased it yet (LOL!!).

    1. This is easy as can be. My handyman can do with no problem. And the chandelier has been delivered - I promise to post on it.

    2. I think I can do a 30 inch wide which will fit perfectly and hold 70 wine bottles or a side by side wine cooler and bevarage cooler. The cabinet gets removed completely.

  7. I have installed a wine cooler like that. Depending on size maybe not as easy as you think, really need two full depth panels on either side with nothing in between. Look at a Uline, if you are not using a panel on it but leaving it stainless this is what I would purchase and probably will when my current one goes. Much trickier and expensive if you want to do a custom panel. Then I would recommend a Perlick.

  8. I don't want a panel - there are some 30 inch wide that will fit perfectly - I was looking at Allavino earlier.

  9. I have a Marvel which has been just fine so far. Only downside is the giant label on the front which I don't like looking at. I did not add panels as the visible amount of stainless is minimal. But when I saw the label, l wish I had done a panel. Also... Wine fridges typically do not hold as many bottles as the marketing indicates as bottles come in many sizes. Larger bottles take up more room, reducing capacity a bit.

    1. Thanks for these tips. I would not like that label either.

  10. I had the built in desk in my kitchen removed, granite raised, and my awesome cabinet guy built doors, drawers, and a cabinet with pull out shelves tall enough for tall liquor bottles. We also put in a wine fridge. Make sure that you get one that is intended to be built in (front vented), and that you have enough clearance in the back for the plug to be plugged in. I found mine on amazon. Can't wait to see the transformation!

  11. I too am installing wine refrigerator. I have been told important to have a refrigerator where air will circulate at bottom. That way will not burn out. I am currently having one placed in cabinets being built, but I think your idea is terrific. All your plans are well thought out,it will be lovely.

    1. You need an inch on either side and several inches top and back for circulation and a built-in style one which have a front vent at the bottom. And thank you!

  12. Great advice on the frig's front venting. Necessary indeed.

Do you visit the blog Zhush? Today, there is a particularly nice posting entitled Palm Beach Perfection. Right up your alley! Warning: This blog is difficult to read as there are sooooo many adverts. The first photo features an especially beautiful chandelier that appears to have been painted white and a fab white palm tree~!
