The Master Bedroom

Annie Selke Gold Leaf Pagoda Bed

The master bedroom is now all painted and it is gorgeous - the painters finished late yesterday. The master is quite unusual - it's pentagon shaped with five large windows and overlooks the lanai and the preserves. It has two transoms as well with antique stained glass windows.

The centerpiece will be my favorite piece I own - my Annie Selke gold leaf pagoda canopy bed I purchased years ago at Neiman Marcus and my Heavenly Bed mattress set. It is always dressed in high end sheets like Frette and Pratesi (HomeGoods scores). The room will be all blue and white. There is room for a couch, coffee table, and chairs. I can't wait to start decorating it.

Here is my dilemma. I have never been a fan of a television in the master bedroom. I have read that it is bad for your sleep - too much stimulation before bedtime. I also am not crazy about it visually.

BUT, the master is going to be my retreat and I like the idea of being in bed with the puppies watching HGTV or whatever and playing on the computer. And I am thinking of one of those beautiful Samsung frame TVs. Here is the post I did recently about it. I saw them in person at Best Buy and WOW. Here it is below.

Samsung Frame TV

To be honest, I think the reason I did not is because with my husband and now GG, if there were a TV, they would eat and drink in bed watching TV and that is a pet peeve of mine - I love pristine white sheets sans potato chip crumbs and red wine stains.

So my friends, weigh in. What are your thoughts on having  a TV in the master bedroom? Yea or nay? Do you have one in yours and why or why not?

  1. We had room for a television in the master of our last home, but not in our current house.
I never found a comfortable way to sit upright and watch tv while sitting in the bed. I love the idea of the frame television! I think the next time we buy a tv, it will be a frame tv.
Love that bed, btw. It's positively regal!

    1. Thank you. The master is quite large and the frame TV is 2 inches deep. Amazing!

  2. Love your bed! It's fabulous! I've had bedrooms with and without a TV. In my current house I don't have a TV --- my thoughts were that if I wanted to watch something or catch the news I could always do so on my i-pad or cellphone, even. But I find hand held devices too stimulating and it's hard to drift off to sleep when you're trying to hold onto something. So I am now rethinking a TV. I say go for the Samsung Frame TV. If you don't like it you can always move it to another room.

  3. I love having a tv in my bedroom! I fought it for awhile because I had also read that you shouldn’t put a tv in the bedroom. The samsung is a beauty, you should get one!

  4. I've had a TV in the bedroom in a past house and when I moved 8 years ago didn't put one in the new house but now really want to put one in the bedroom. Love the Samsung frame TV think I'll look into that option too.

  5. Right as the lockdown for the pandemic started in our area, our bedroom TV broke. It was quite old and this was not a surprise. We would have replaced it by now if it was easy to have people in our home for intallation--which it is not right now. I've been making doe with live streaming and Netflix, Acorn TV, Youtube, etc. etc on my computer. I do think we will eventually buy a Frame TV for our bedroom and will enjoy it.

    1. Yes, it's disconcerting having workers in my new house, but you have to do what you have to do sometimes. We are lucky to be able to stream on our computers.

  6. Your bedroom is your retreat. Having the tv in it, especially with that frame, would be an advantage. I love sitting by my fireplace in my bedroom with an easy listening station on the tv while reading a book or magazine. Plus, you can always watch HGTV, too! Just because it’s there doesn’t mean you always have to use it, but it certainly is nice when you do! Just my thinking! Love your journey!

  7. If you want to have the TV in the bedroom, great. The problem is that you don't want people eating in bed. Bet you've trained your pups not to eat in bed. GG can probably be trained, too.

    1. You must have missed that GG has been cut from the team. Somebody else will have to train him and best of luck on that.

  9. Will there be a formal living room and then a TV room? If so, get a comfy sofa with ottoman where you can watch TV with the dogs and snack or watch a movie with friends. If you like pristine sheets, you may not appreciate sleeping with dog hair and pet dander.

    1. Yes, a formal living room and a study/TV room. And my wonderful little puppies have always slept with me. Men come and go, but not my dogs.

  10. I haven't had a TV in the bedroom since I bought an I-Pad. If I'm under the weather, I lie in bed and stream shows on the I-Pad. However, with Covid around, I have started to wonder if I should install a TV, especially since, with my HOA, I'm paying for two boxes and connections even if I don't use them.

  11. I couldn't live without a TV in my master. It lives in a beautiful armoire where I keep other useful things as well and on top of which I have a lovely collection of blue and white chinoiserie pieces. The TV is not huge but that's fine with me.

My bedroom is my sanctum sanctorum. I always have coffee in bed in the morning while I check my email and read the latest news on my laptop and I've been known to have a glass of wine at night watching a favorite show. I also like to have the TV on when I'm working in there--cleaning, organizing closets, getting ready to go out, whatever. It is so useful and I like it out of sight when I am not watching.

The big flat screen, no matter how pretty would not work for me in the bedroom because it would be hard to decorate around it the way the interior architecture works. I get more "real estate" bang for the buck with an armoire (and the TV in it) than just the TV/artwork on the wall instead. I also like the height and scale the armoire ads to the whole set up.

We do have one rule though...no TV before bedtime. Only reading is permitted.

    1. An armoire is definitely a great solution. But I have so much else I want in the room like a couch and sitting area, I like that the frame TV is just 2 inches deep.

  12. If I had a blank slate to decorate in the bedroom I would definitely consider the Samsung Frame TV. It looks as unobtrusive as they come. I'd have to know more about the choice of "picture" I can have on it when not in use.

The only TV that's in plain sight in our home is a small one in the kitchen. I haven't yet learned to live with or decorate around a TV that's just out there hanging on the wall. But then I haven't been out checking the latest and the greatest.

    1. The frame TV comes with a bunch of art choices and you can also do a monthly subscription for hundreds of others from museums and art galleries around the globe, or upload your own photos or art.

  13. I live in a 2 bedroom condo so not as much space as your home. I have a large tv in the 2nd bedroom which is considered our TV room and guest room. This is the only tv we have. I have built in closets in our master bedroom that have slide out shelves for our laptops. Our living room feels spacious and it is wonderful to enjoy by ourselves for reading or having guests over. We do have a dining area that can seat 8 people comfortably. Living in downtown Chicago means we would normally be very busy and not too much tv would be watched. Right now these different times means we are home more but I am glad we only go into the TV room when we want to watch television.

  14. I have a TV in my bedroom and I love it. I also have one of those adjustable beds that you can move into all sorts of positions so I can sit up or semi-recline to whatever position is comfortable for me, and I love that too. My bedroom is the one place in the house where I can escape. If your master bedroom is going to be your retreat, I say go for it.

  15. I absolutely LOVE your bed. What a treasure. I have a TV in my bedroom. I know all the research about TVs, other devices, and sleep. But it's cold here in the far north in winter and I love to curl up to watch TV before bed. My solution? Use the TV's timer to turn it off.
I also vote for the Samsung Frame TV. It's beautiful. I have two Samsung smart TVs and love them.

  16. My vote is to get the framed tv.
Likely, you'll have a beautiful artwork on the wall anyway, so why not start with a piece of art that has the option of being a tv? It's moveable if you decide otherwise.
I'm not inclined to tv's anywhere else in the house (easy enough to catch news, programs streamed on my laptop), and I like relaxing at the end of the day with my husband watching a nature program from the comfort of my bed. I usually drop off first, so I don't have to go through the rigamarole of getting up from another room, leaving him behind, and then settling in bed (only to be awakened by him when he finally turns in).

That fabulous bed is to die for!

Any man that eats potato chips in bed is a walking red light!

  17. Nay. Never. This is one topic I have very strong opinions on. I have never had one and refuse to entertain the idea. I have always loved knowing the bedroom was one area of refuge from the outside world, kept pristine and serene. We like having rooms designated for a particular activity- kitchen for cooking (no tv there, either), den for tv, living room for gathering, etc. I don't even like watching tv in bed in a hotel- it feels so smarmy. But, to each his own- I am certainly in the minority on this one, based on every family member/friend we know having a tv in practically every room.

  18. I have loved that bed. It will be absolutely stunning in your new master bedroom. I think you have hit upon a stylish solution with the frame TV. I don't think that is the issue. I think you need to find a way to eliminate future lover(s!) who don't spill red wine or eat in bed. At the very least some sort of mechanism for the offenders to take responsibility for returning wonderful, but expensive sheets, to former
their pristine conditions. You're an attorney. I'm sure you can figure it out! (haha). My husband was finishing law school when we got engaged. He created a prenup for us: Kansas basketball (his school, his passion) and Oklahoma football (mine). It's worked out for 45 years...except in 1988 when KU played OU for NCAA championship. I lost and have truly never gotten over it!! I'd worry less about wine spillers (bleach on spot and copious cold water. Don't soak, that weakens fibers) and make a priority checklist: no sociopaths, no psychopaths, no narcissists, no charmers without substance. After this misadventure, I'm sure you will be fine. So happy for your new life to shine on.

  21. I would never have a TV in the bedroom. Even when off it emits EMFs which can disturb the sleep cycle. Some people are more sensitive to this than others. If I don't sleep deeply, I'm not a happy camper!

  22. I vote against a tv in the bedroom - for me, they interfere with sleep.

I also have a question on another topic - do you have any recommendations on where to find lampshades? I'm looking for specific / custom sizes and am shocked at prices!!!

  23. I feel lucky. I have never had a desire to eat in bed, it just seems very uncomfortable to me. I've also read that one should avoid having a TV in the bedroom. Same goes for exercise equipment, ironing boards etc. Sitting in bed eating and watching television feels very convalescent hospital to me.
You live alone (for now) in all that square footage. Isn't your whole house a retreat? I would like to see a smart media room. A comfortable love seat and upholstered ottoman. Do an arrangement of your favorite flowers every week. Have favorite books at hand. In other words you have a large house, use all of it.
That being said-Your bed is divine and if you want a television in your bedroom the Samsung looks great. I'm also certain that any custom frame shop could make a frame for a television and you could choose the style.

    1. Well of course you would not eat in bed. I am creating a beautiful study that has two gorgeous built in desks and bookcases. One has already been converted into a bar. The room will have a blush pink velvet sofa and that Mary McDonald red leather Campaign chair. My large TV goes in there. But I still like the idea of a frame TV in the master bedroom. And yes, my whole house is a retreat. LOL

  24. When I moved to Florida, I didn't want a TV in the master, but the husband did. I searched for one with with a white bezel (pre-Samsung era) and then surrounded it with art in smaller white frames. I tell myself that it 'disappears'. At least, it no longer stands out.

I would certainly consider the Samsung. Do what makes you happy.

  25. I love that bed-so much that I ordered the silver version for an apartment I kept within the NYC limits during my judgeship. It fit in the elevator but couldn’t clear a turn once upstairs so I had to send it back. I was in tears. I called the company and asked if it could be broken down into pieces but they said it was manufactured abroad and that it couldn’t be done. When we moved into our current home, I told my husband that I had to have it but Annie Selke had discontinued it. Still dream about it.
Re the television in the bedroom, I have watched in bed since adolescence so it is a must for me. When the ginormous one in our bedroom breaks, I will definitely purchase the frame TV. I think you get the best of both possible worlds. A marvelous art display when you aren’t inclined to watch and a comfortable place to hang out at day’s end or when you are under the weather!

  26. I had a TV in the master bedroom in my last house and spent all my time there...never went into the family room where another TV resided. It was just too cozy in bed. But I felt like the other rooms were useless. In my current home I have the TV in the living room and not the bedroom and now I spend lots more time in the living room. I miss being able to watch TV in bed, but there isn't enough room to have another piece of furniture anywhere. I'd love to have the Frame if it were possible! It's wonderful that you have lots of space - so live it up!

  27. My TV, which is in the living room, is hidden by a beautiful Japanese folding screen. As we had our house built, we had a cavity made to fit the TV and cut the folding screen down the middle, so it folds back and against the wall when we watch TV and folds back to hide the screen when we don't want to watch anything. The Japanese screen is so beautiful with a gold background, sprays of grasses and flowers, and quails.

  28. Pretty sure I'm in the minority on this one, but there are only two things to do in a bedroom. TV is not one of them! I'm absolutely in love with the frame TV and will purchase one at some point, perhaps for my next home. Your bed is divine. I absolutely love it.

  29. I believe having a television in the bedroom is simply a matter of what you are accustomed to and what habits you have. My bed is for sleeping and reading, not eating, drinking or viewing television. However, I do know people who have a tv in every room. I wonder if this is to source ambient background noise in the room?? I have a number of Sonos speakers placed around my house in rooms that are frequented. In the morning I put on various news podcasts followed by music for the rest of the day. This sort of cures the need for TV noise. There is no better speaker system than Sonos IMO. All managed from an app on your phone. Choose your own tunes and avoid commercials! Yea! I even set the timer on at bedtime to go off in 30 minutes which is awesome.

All being said, the Samsung Frame looks to be a wonderful model for placing in a bedroom.

The pagoda bed is a beauty and looks to be manufactured just for CC! I can totally envision it covered with luxurious blue and white linens. I have purchased a number of Anne Selke rugs that I love. In my kitchen is a runner designed by Bunny Williams for AS made of recycled plastic bottles. It can be easily cleaned by dragging it outside, hosing it down and letting it dry in the hot Florida sunshine! Looks brand new once again.

  30. I do not ever ever turn on any of the TVs in my home persoanlly. If I want to watch something then I watch on my laptop or ipad.I do watch shows with family members if they have it on but I just don't turn it on myself. If I lived alone I'm not sure I would even own a TV (except maybe for Wimbeldon and the Olympics.) If I did want one then the frame tv would definitely appeal to me.

  32. I am a news junkie too. A (disguised) TV in every room, on everywhere , if I'm doing chores. Nothing better for company. Also nothing better than getting ready for work in the morning with the local news on. Or being able to watch TV in my own bedroom if there are guests in the house.

It is subjective, to be sure. But I have no problem turning the TV off in my bedroom at night and just reading. Our habits give us comfort and this is one of mine. Luckily, hubs is on the same wavelength.
