Samplize and Paint Color Choices

Benjamin Moore Classic Gray OC-23

I received my Samplize paint samples on Monday and they are absolutely great. If you recall, for $5.95 each, you get 12 inch by 12 inch samples painted with 2 coats of real paint that are peel and stick and can be moved from room to room. So they are cost effective, no fuss, no mess. They arrived very quickly, beautifully packaged and labeled, and are perfectly painted. I recommend this product without hesitation.

I was already leaning toward BM Classic Gray. It is elegant, timeless, and makes any space bright and airy. It will look great with my stone floors and is a perfect backdrop for art.

Benjamin Moore Classic Gray

I also ordered Benjamin Moore Balboa Mist and Collingwood Gray.

Benjamin Moore Balboa Mist OC-27

I would say Balboa Mist is one shade darker than Classic Gray, and Collingwood Gray is one shade darker again. All are gorgeous colors. I would call them true grays with a bit of warmth. My painter has suggested painting the tray ceiling in the great room the wall color as opposed to white, and I love the idea. It will really set off the 12 foot ceiling and moldings. I was thinking of choosing Collingwood Gray for the tray ceiling for a little contrast/interest as opposed to using the Classic Gray wall color. Thoughts?

Collingwood Gray OC-28

As soon as I close on the new house, I will bring these over and try them out. But right now, leaning very heavily towards the Classic Gray.

And Samplize is a great product - I wish I had thought of that!

I am headed to HomeGoods this morning. Perhaps another great find. I am on a roll.

  2. I was rooting for a clean, pure white not a gray. The light in the new house will tell you what you need to know and how colors look different at different parts of the day/night. When I painted the ceiling of my long room (kitchen, den, library) I was amazed at how the color read differently on the north side (large windows to garden) and the south south (large windows to garden) AT THE SAME TIME!!! I had so many green samples on my ceiling a young electrician apprentice looked up and said, "Hey, dude, you're going camo!" Hillside green won the toss. Good luck and agree about Samplize!

    1. I am not a fan of white personally - I have never left a single room in any home I have ever owned white. Classic Gray is so light that it reads white in rooms with a lot of light which my new house has in spades. I think a pure white would be very stark in the Florida light.

  3. I love the classic gray color, too. I have BM linen white in my office and family room and just love it! It is warm and light.
I love the idea of painting the tray ceiling a different shade from the wall color. Thanks for sharing your journey with us!

  4. I like the Classic Gray because it's the lightest of the three. Good call about painting the tray ceiling the same color as the walls.

    1. In Florida light, it reads very light and bright and highly reflective. The tray ceiling will be gorgeous!

  5. Classic gray looks fantastic in the BM room example you've shown. The biggest challenge IMO will be how well it goes with the stone floors which, at least on my screen, look warmish. But then you'll know soon enough. This is when a quick check of Maria Killam's site might prove to be useful...just in case.

    1. I had the Classic Gray with me when I went over for the inspections and then met with my painters and it is perfect with the floors - that's why I chose it. I generally prefer cooler grays with blue but this is warm.

    2. Beth, what trim color are you using?

  6. They're all really pretty greys, and so close in shades to one another! I've never really gravitated towards greys, thinking they would be too cold to live with, but I've always loved the pale, soft greys you see in Gustavian furniture and style. I can see where grey would feel soft and cool in a tropical climate like Florida.

    1. I did this entire house in BM Aura Matte in Stonington Gray and adore it. I just need something lighter and warmer for my new house. I can't get enough of gray - to me, it is the perfect neutral. I was never a fan of beiges.

  7. I rarely paint a ceiling white unless the room is white and often paint the ceiling the same color as the room. The Classic Gray will probably look a bit darker on the ceiling if that is the effect you want. (PS recently painted the ceiling in my dressing room BM Razzle Dazzle which looks like your border color.) I think you said you follow Laurel Bern. She has featured our house many times.

  8. Our daughter used Collingwood in her home in the great room and living room. It is a stunning and sophisticated color. That is my vote!

  9. Glad I don't have to choose the best...all these grays are beautiful and will make a beautiful background for your furnishings and accessories, for sure.

  10. Thank you for letting us know about Samplize. What a great idea! I love the shades of pale gray you have selected. May I suggest painting the ceiling pink. A shade like the palest pink inside a conch shell. It is very flattering to the complexion and it would tie in the pink and green you are so fond of.

    1. That is such a great idea. Did you happen to see I am getting a blush pink velvet sofa for my study? Love that color. BTW, I use pink bulbs in every single solitary lamp I own. I have posted on how flattering they are. I was devastated when the 3 ways 50 - 100- 150 were discontinued and I stocked up but have finally run out. So I use 60 watt instead.

    2. I'm glad I'm not the only person addicted to incandescent light bulbs, and candle light. I have to search the internet to find proper light bulbs.
