Faux Palm Tree - Help Me Decide

Canvas Nursery Buddha Palm - Allison Allen Design

So, my one completely and totally crazy and fanciful purchase for the new house is a canvas palm tree from the Canvas Nursery. I have wanted one of these since I first saw it in Rebecca de Ravenel's LA apartment, but this would not have worked in my Virginia home at all. In Venice, it will be amazing.

Why do I need a faux palm when I look out onto a hundred? To me, Chinoiserie is about the fanciful, the whimsical, and this will make me smile every day. This house is all about returning joy to my life after a truly terrible period in my life.

Rebecca de Ravenel

I am using a 9 foot one and it will go in the great room. I have narrowed it down to the four below. Which of these do you like? It is an hour drive south of me, and as soon as I move I will buzz down and pick it up in person. The owner is really nice.

The Royal Palm

This palm is a classic - there are several in my yard here. Elegant and stately, this is their top of the line palm.

Feather-Hawaiian Palm

Feminine and delicate, this palm would be a pretty choice.

Banana Tree

Love banana leaf fabrics and wallpapers? - well this is the real thing - but in a faux version. LOL! BTW, the banana tree is technically not a palm.

Coconut Palm

These palms are all over where I live - the coconuts fall into the lake behind my house and bob up and down in the water.

So, which is your favorite? I had a hard time narrowing it down to my top four. Your comments are really really helpful. I am thinking about using one of my beautiful blue and white Chinese fish bowls for it.

  4. The Royal Palm! Every "Queen Bee" should have one! Had them in our yard when we lived in Fort Lauderdale as well as at our weekend home in Vero Beach.

  7. I agree about the Royal. My suggestion: double the joy and use a pair of them! Have you seen this: ://www.1stdibs.com/furniture/wall-decorations/wallpaper/carolina-tree-life-forest-tropical-botanical-wallpaper/id-f_11864123/? Maybe framing a couple of panels of these gorgeous birds/flora! You need an "atomic clock" set for hours/minutes/seconds the dream house becomes yours!

  16. Royal Palm...but personally, nothing comes close to the real thing. I do, however, understand the attraction to this "look".

    1. My garden and community have thousands and thousands and thousands of the real thing. This is about flights of fancy.

  17. It's between the Royal Palm and the Banana Tree. Best of all you are choosing the nine foot tall version. It will really make a statement. How about a pair? Either end of the couch or flanking a fireplace. Love that you are making your home a happy place filled with what makes you smile. That's the best decorating advice of all.

    1. A pair would be great. A fireplace - you do know I am in South Florida, right? LOL
Yes, it is very liberating to be able to decide on everything that makes me happy with no man to weigh in, veto, or complain.

  19. I love your whimsical side, Beth, and anything that makes you smile and feel good is an emphatic yes! When I was younger I had a one bedroom cottage style apartment. I had two wooden planters custom made for the front porch. I painted them light blue and stenciled in white paint "L'herbs" on one, and "Fleurs" on the other, planted herbs, bought a trellis for the other and planted sky blue morning glories and pink impatiens in it. Perhaps it sounds a bit juvenile now, but I was young, and they just brought so much pleasure to me, I can't begin to tell you. Sorry to digress, but you happily reminded me how much I need to reintroduce the fanciful and whimsical back into my own life.

I vote for the Royal Palm or the Banana Tree, (I love the big leaves on the banana tree), and home before dark's idea about multiples is a great one. I can't wait to see which one(s) you choose.

    1. I love this comment. My daughter has inherited my love for whimsy - her house in Northern Virginia is monkeys and pagodas and ginger jars and banana leaf and so fun. I love your story - decorating need not be so serious. Let you freak flag fly.

  21. My favorite is the feather Hawaiian Palm because the leaves are the first thing you see. It's very airy and elegant. The others bring the eye to the trunks first, then the palm.
Whichever you pick it will look great in your home...

    1. I love that one too and agree. I am surprised by how few "votes" it received. Perhaps because it is the most understated of the four.

  22. It will look gorgeous in a blue and white fishbowl. I'm a huge fan of 1 and 2 as true palms. Love Banana leaf one but it is a bit of a different look than a true palm. Not a fan of 4. Can't wait to see this place come together. So exciting!
