The Florida Chinoise Dining Room

Hannah Crowell

I really like the vibe of this dining room by Nashville designer Hannah Crowell. Created for a young family's vacation home in Anna Maria Island, quite close to here, it captures what I am calling Florida Chinoise style that combines Chinoiserie and tropical elements.

I love the banana leaf curtains in Dorothy Draper's Brazilliance, a favorite fabric of mine, the wicker chairs (yesterday's post was on the topic of the resurgence of wicker), bamboo blinds, a striped rug, and a really fun tassel chandelier. These tasseled chandeliers are very bohemian and textural and just perfect for a beach house. They are very hot. This room is classic, fun, colorful, modern, and looks so easy to maintain. My favorite element is the wicker chairs reminiscent of the design of the mid century classic S shaped Panton chair. Do you like this dining room?

  3. I really like this room, but -- just based on this limited view -- I wish there were faux Roman Shades, made from the Dorothy Draper fabric, hung high over the slider. Having one window very dressed and one with nothing seems a little weird to me, as well as a lost opportunity. I also feel like there is a much better rug out there for this room -- something that is either uniformly pale or has a little green in it. Of course, things may look much different in person -- or the rug may have been added by the stylist, since people with kids often avoid rugs in the dining room.

    1. I am not a big fan of rugs in a dining room, but I do love a striped rug.

  4. The banana leaf drapes are really fun. Whenever I see a banana leaf pattern it makes me think of the Beverly Hills Hotel, although I don't know if it's still part of their decor. I've not been there in years. Love the chairs. The table not so much, but I'm just not a mid-century person.

  5. Yes! I love this dining room. I have always loved Dorothy Draper's fabric. I am not a fan of the brown striped rug. It is too dull for me. I do not like brown. Do you have source for the tasseled chandelier?
