Chic or Chancy?

Les Ensembliers

I posted yesterday about this wonderful Palm Beach home and really like the front. It reminds me a lot of my home - quite formal, taupe stucco, dark gray tile roof, black front door, palm trees in front.

Note the two pairs of ginger jars flanking the door. I have two very deep window ledges in the front of my house that would be perfect for a pair of large ginger jars. I  live in a gated community, but the idea of expensive ginger jars in front that could be carried off concerns me a tad. Still, I love the look. I wonder if these were just for the photo shoot or if they are permanent? There are also two pairs of black planters with tropicals planted in them but the weight of these makes them more immune from theft.

Still debating the ginger jar idea - a great look, but wonder if they would be safe. Thoughts?

  1. It does have class, but there is something wrong with the proportions and the negative space / walls over the windows flancking the front door. Also the trim over the door is weird. that entire wall could do with some re-thinking. Otherwise...the bones are there. The gardening part is just perfect.

  2. I agree with JDM. If you make them difficult to move, then they will be more theft-proof, but maybe use large landscape pebbles so you can take them out in case you want to move them. Maybe inside the door instead?

  3. I lived in a gated community in Atlanta and can't recall an instance where nice planters, etc were ever stolen. That being said, I would err on the side of caution and fill with pebbles so it wouldn't just be a pick up and load decision. The longer they have to hang around the less they would be inclined to do so.

  4. Perhaps double front doors...the single door looks rather skimpy. The landscape rocks!

  5. I am absolutely wild about that house--inside and outside. It's fantastic! I love everything about it, including that fabric on the chairs, which looks like Kelly Wearstler's, but not quite. Is it? I looked up the design team who did the house---Les Ensembliers. They work is magnificent. In this article, you can see some of it--maybe Beth can use the dining room for a blog post--there are some gorgeous oriental jars on the mantle. "This Montreal Couple Designed a Whole House Around the Art". With respect to Chic or Chancy, I say go for it!!! Take a chance! The jars would look great there. But if you're too nervous, you could always put heavy rocks in the bottom of the ginger jars to make it hard for someone to carry them away! Or glue them down! You can always put GOOP glue remover under them if you want to pry them up in the future.

  6. I've lived in FL in upscale neighborhoods for over 40yrs. Our baby Jesus was stolen out of the nativity scene and fruit stripped right from the trees and even a hand painted Jack o lantern and the big bowl of candy, including bowl. I've had potted plates taken & recently at a Garden Club event of lovely ladies someone liked the floral arrangement I did so much they took it home including my container. You'd be taking a chance. 8. People do and take the craziest things but my bigger concern in Fl would be the weather - the wind and hard rain can really kick up quickly. I would think you could fill them with pea gravel to weight them down and hopefully save them from toppling over or being carted off!! Either way I love the look - chic!!

  9. So much to LOVE here...those lanterns on either side of the door are such a wonderful size! I don't know if I would take the chance...I love my blue & white and never want to part with it: for any reason. I know you will decide exactly the right thing for you. Maybe speak to your neighbors (if possible) and ask them of any prior incidences of theft there….

  10. I'd go with the no group for both the concerns of theft and weather/storm/blasting sun damage. It might be kitch. It might be genius. What about having custom window boxes made for your ledges in the shape of a cluster of ginger jars on all four sides and painted on the inside where be seen? Hummmmm I wonder what Pink Pagoda and daughter might do with this idea.

  11. As a Floridian in living in a lovely neighborhood for almost 10 years I will tell you the weather will be your enemy- one large wind gust, even full of rocks and they would be goners! I have had several large and heavy tall ceramic planters knocked over and shattered by the wind. Theft is also a huge concern, as I've sadly learned, anything that can be stolen from your property WILL be stolen from your property in FL!
