I came across this photo of a fabulous dog bed with a black and white Japanese Chin. Chins are quite rare in the United States and becoming far rarer as new CDC rules prevent the importation of puppies under 6 months of age. It took me a year to find Bea and she is from Canada (before the ban went into effect). Here is my little girl Beatrice all grown up.

Harper will be turning 10 years old in just a few weeks. It's hard to believe - everyone thinks she is a puppy and she certainly looks and acts like one. She is such a little angel. This photo is from last Valentine's Day in her Maxbone Christian Cowan pink feather sweater.

Here is Baby Beatrice this past Saturday on her first birthday. She was weighed last week and she is 5.5 pounds. Such a cutie. She is wearing a classic pink cashmere sweater by Ralph Lauren. And here is Harper in an orange Ralph Lauren cashmere turtleneck. Harper is just 4 pounds and change - a tiny baby. She will be turning 10 in March.

Beatrice, whom I call Baby Bea, turns 6 months old this week. She is on the right - she is getting so tall. She is really calming down - far more cuddly and less crazy and she is so smart. She is completely housebroken, sleeps all night, and loves her sister Harper. They are such good buddies.

New HomeGoods Find

I was in HomeGoods and one of the stockers was putting this out. I swooped it up instantly, my new faux boxwood topiary dog. I have it in my breakfast room at the moment styled with a dog bowl. Beatrice keeps checking the dog bowl to see if she is missing out on anything....

Beatrice @ Four Months

The puppy is now 4 months old and growing up so fast. Today she is going with Harper for her first grooming. There is not really much to do - Japanese Chins do not get trimmed, but she will get a nice bath, her nails trimmed, and such. I want to get her accustomed to grooming at this age so she is comfortable with it. I have a wonderful groomer just up the street. She has her own shop, just takes one client at a time, only small dogs, and she uses all organic products. She is really fantastic.

In the Bag

Beatrice turned 16 weeks yesterday and is growing like crazy. She decided to take her toys out of the L.L.Bean Boat & Tote and get in it. She is a handful! You know the expression "in the bag" which means you are certain to get it? She is literally in the bag.

Today is the 9th birthday of my wonderful Japanese Chin Harper. She has been at my side through all the highs and lows of this period, and I could not imagine a more wonderful friend.

Valentine's Day Flower Tips

Many of us will be getting roses for Valentine's Day whether as gifts from others or to ourselves. Most will come in those generic glass florist's vases or no vase. Do yourself a favor and put them in one of your blue and white Chinese vases or ginger jars. Such a beautiful combination. And carnations as shown above in this beautiful vignette by Carolyne Roehm are a gorgeous and very chic again alternative to roses.

The girls are inseparable after just a weekend together. The puppy is a little angel and the happiest puppy I have ever seen. Completely relaxed and just enjoying life completely. Things could not have gone better.

Our new puppy Beatrice is en route and will be here in a few hours. My week did not go exactly as planned - instead of a relaxing week getting organized for the new puppy, I ended up with not one but two emergency laser eye surgeries to repair tears in both my retinas. One surgery Wednesday and one yesterday.

Exciting news. One week from day, there will be a new baby puppy at CCC. Harper and I are very excited and getting everything ready for her arrival. I am trying to squeeze all my appointments and meetings and such into this next week so that after she gets here, we can just stay in and enjoy her and get her into a routine.

My one wish for Christmas was a new puppy in 2024 and Santa came through. If all goes according to plan, the new puppy, baby Beatrice, will be joining us in February.
