My girls are, as you might guess, very Chinoiserie Chic. I have two Japanese Chin. Despite its name, the Japanese Chin's roots trace back to China as early as the 5th century. Honored as religious symbols and pampered companions by Chinese and Korean royalty, these ancient lapdogs were eventually gifted to Japanese nobility, officially debuting in the West in 1853 via Commodore Matthew Perry.
While the breed is synonymous with Japan, canine historians generally agree that its true origins lie in China, where similar dogs were kept in Buddhist monasteries and imperial palaces. Ancestors of the Chin—sharing lineages with the Pekingese, Shih Tzu, and Tibetan Spaniel—traveled the Silk Road and were frequently exchanged as prized diplomatic gifts between Chinese, Korean, and Japanese emperors. Japanese royalty cherished them deeply, housing them in luxurious quarters, and in some cases, employing servants to hand-feed them and care for their every need.
