Stump the Band

Chefanie Hamptons Stargazer Cocktail Napkins

Do any of you remember the Stump the Band segment on Johnny Carson where an audience member would come up with the title of an obscure song and see if Carson or Ed McMahon or the band could come up with the song?

Yesterday I came across these cocktail napkins. I had no idea what the design is. The listing says they are "Chefanie Hamptons Gates of Paradise Cocktail Napkins." Huh? Are they Birds of Paradise? Some religious symbol (gates of paradise)? I was completely stumped.

AI to the rescue. It turns out there is a vintage roadside statue in New York as you enter the Hamptons that is considered the gateway to the Hamptons. The giant sculpture is in a sod field in Manorville along Route 111. It was designed by the late Linda Scott and erected in 1991.

It is an abstract deer with an antler in its mouth looking skyward. The 70 by 50 foot statue was recently restored after years of neglect. It was quite fragile made of plywood over a metal frame. A Go Fund Me raised over $100,000 for the restoration.

Well, now I know. Definitely the most unusual cocktail napkin design ever.
