China Pattern Search

Mystery Alligator Plate

I came across this place setting image and loved the alligator plate and decided to try to find it. When I looked closely I realized the alligator has five legs - clearly AI created since they don't have five legs normally - LOL. Even though this is clearly computer generated, I went on a little search to see if there is anything like it out there.

I found on eBay a small "Alligator Alley" Porcelain Plate made in Limoges, France by renowned Limoges artist Patricia Deroubaix. She was a top artist for the Philippe Deshoulieres Porcelain Factory in Limoges, France and developed a rare line of her own called "Fragile Creation" which included a set of several different African Jungle animals - one of them an alligator. This pattern was apparently just produced for a short period of time and is quite rare. An interesting note is that Africa does not have alligators and what is pictured is an American alligator.

I bought it and will see if I find more. If not, I will just use it in a tablescape, it is so fun and unique. I did find an eBay seller with a couple of new sets she imported years ago with the intention of selling at her Ft. Lauderdale, Florida store before Hurricane Wilma (2005) put her out of business. But they are over $4,000 per set and I would really just like a few pieces.

It reminds me of my 10 foot plus alligator visitor at CCC almost exactly a year ago.

We will see if more pieces appear down the road, but it was a fun "down the rabbit hole" yesterday. A welcome distraction from the craziness of current events.

  2. I love this. I love seeing alligators depicted in art and decor. They are certainly fascinating creatures. I'm curious to know how Lacoste chose the alligator for their emblem. Remember Don Johnson' pet alligator in Miami Vice? His name was Elvis. Elvis represented the gator mascot of the University of Florida, Sonny Crocket's alma mater.

    1. To make a long story short, René Lacoste's tennis nickname was The Alligator which evolved into Le Crocodile in France and he began having crocodiles embroidered on his match clothing.

    3. Thanks, Beth, for the information. I never knew the genesis of Lacoste’s emblem.

  3. I love dinnerware and glassware and I'd love to get a set of Ginori 1735 in multiple colors but as a retiree it's not something I need, particularly in light of current events.
