January Doldrums

Williams Sonoma

If your home is looking a little sad and empty with the Christmas decorations down and the cold and dreary days of January here, perhaps you need a little pick me up.

Publix has roses on BOGO this week, so I decided to take advantage of this great deal. Buy one dozen for $12.99, get the second free. I got 4 dozen roses for $26.00! Aldi and Trader Joe's have great roses too.

To make sure your roses last, make a fresh cut in each stem at an angle under running water, remove any leaves that will be under water, and use floral preservative.

Most florist roses have lost their scent - buy a wonderful rose scented candle to fill your home. Diptyque is fabulous -

This 3 wick Climbing Rose candle at Target is a well priced alternative -

This candle has excellent throw and a lovely scent. The addition of notes of ivy and fern make the rose scent gentle and not overpowering. Also available in this size. Shipping is free with a $35.00 order.

  1. Sad that roses now are sold for the masses so are produced to be beautiful and perfect and long lasting for shipping. I remember when all bought roses had a wonderful scent (telling my age). So now purchased cut roses have lost that lovely scent. A rose scented candle is a great idea to use. In addition, I might purchase a real patio variety that still has the scent, one of the "older" varieties this year to enjoy for old times sake. Thank you Beth for a great blog I read every morning with my coffee .

  2. Your roses are perfection. Unfortunately "my" Publix only had mixed colored roses and they looked a tad sad. Maybe next time.
    Thanks Beth.

  3. I do wish we had a Publix store where I live. All the roses and other flowers in my grocery always look dead.

  4. Many, many years ago I lived for one year in Oslo. I was impressed with how the Norwegians made their dwellings looking festive for winter even after putting away the Christmas decorations. So to extend the season, I hang lovely glass sculptures (Orrefors, Kosta Soda) - birds, hearts, etc. in the windows to capture the low winter sun. Any kind of glass ornament will do. The glass sculptures are suspended by white ribbons, and they look wintry rather than Christmas-y. The sparkle factor distracts me from the dreary, dull skies that follow the holidays.
