Candles & Cold Throw

Tory Burch

Does anyone else have very special candles that you use as decor and wouldn't think of burning? I definitely have several candles that will never see a match.

I have a collection of these wonderful chinoiserie candles I got many years ago at Neiman Marcus. These hand painted porcelain Limoges goblets feature Chinaman on a Swing, often seen in chinoiserie fabrics and wallpapers.

And these Charlotte Moss pagoda candles that were long ago discontinued.

Did you know that scented candles give off their scent without burning them? It's called "cold throw."

Some cold throws are more powerful than others, says Diptyque Marketing Director Eduardo Valadez. “Woody notes tend to need heat to release them, but a tuberose or gardenia candle is going to be quite diffusive even without a flame, just because white florals are so heady and intense.” And as anyone with an unlit Diptyque Ambre or Feu de Bois sitting around can attest, “you can also smell the more resinous, smoky candles quite well without burning them.”

There's something to be said for that quiet ambience that a candle can create without the need for striking a match.

I definitely prefer floral scented candles, and find that mine give off a subtle scent in a room without burning. And I love using scented candles in linen closets. Here are some candles I love that I would definitely use for decor and for their cold throw.

Great housekeeping tip -  If your candle looks dusty or gunky, dip a microfiber cleaning cloth into lukewarm water and wring it out. Then gently wipe the candle using short motions in the same direction (no back-and-forth wiping).

  1. I must admit that almost all my candles are for decorative purposes only. They're just too pretty to burn! Many have a lovely cold throw. And if I require more fragrance I use a room spray.
