Turning the Ordinary Into the Extraordinary

Smoked Sea Salt

I mentioned in yesterday's post smoked sea salt. IMHO it is something you really should have in your pantry. Smoked sea salt is a finishing salt. You do not use it during cooking but AFTER. It is mild and delicate, adding a subtle hint of smoke and a textural crunch. Don't waste it cooking with it. It is not kosher salt.

Here are just some of the ways you can use smoked sea salt:

1. When you have put your grill away for the season, use it for that smoky flame grilled flavor on anything you would grill - meat, chicken, seafood, vegetables.

2. On a grilled cheese sandwich.

3. On any breakfast or brunch eggs - especially scrambled eggs.

4. On an avocado or avocado toast.

5. On soups.

6. On chili.

7. On the rim of a Bloody Mary or margarita.

8. On vanilla or chocolate ice cream.

9. On brownies or chocolate chip cookies just out of the oven.

10. On corn on the cob.

11. On sliced heirloom tomatoes.

12. On roasted vegetables. Try my favorite - on broiled shishito peppers.

13. On salads.

I'm sure many of you already use Maldon Sea Salt. This is the smoked version - it too is a classic. There are many smoked sea salts on the market, but this one is delicate and a lovely introduction.

Maldon Smoked Sea Salt - Set of 2

And if you are not already using the regular Maldon Sea Salt, try it too.

This salt comes from Essex in South-eastern England. Maldon sea salt comes from the Blackwater Estuary. This unique water body combines the fresh water that comes from the Blackwater River and the salt water coming from the Black Sea.

This sea salt is known for its pyramid-shaped, soft, and flaky crystals and white color. A family run business has harvested it since 1882.

Sea salt is produced through evaporation of the ocean water or the water from saltwater lakes. This salt is considered healthier than table salt as it is less refined and it contains various trace minerals.

Sea salt is a good source of trace minerals, supports the healthy nervous system, prevents dehydration and improves skin and oral health.

This is about taking ordinary dishes and making them extraordinary. How to use it?

Take a pinch, crush the crystals between your fingertips, and let them fall on freshly cooked food.

This makes me think of salt cellars that are perfect for these salts. My mother had the most stunning set of cobalt blue crystal salt cellars with tiny sterling silver spoons.

These would be great to house your sea salt on the table so people can help themselves.

I love these Dodie Thayer for Tory Burch lettuce ware ones - with spoons.

This divided salt cellar could be used for the smoked sea salt and regular sea salt or salt and pepper.

I think the two Maldon sea salts and a salt cellar would make a wonderful Christmas gift for the gourmet in your life.
