Don't Put Me on a Pedestal

Elly Poston Cooper - Frederic Magazine

The title is tongue in cheek, because I have always admired ginger jars on pedestals. Now that I am no longer living with a man who was a bull in a china shop, I am exploring adding a pair because I love the look and the ginger jars won't end up smashed on the floor. The pedestal above is one of a pair in this Charleston, S.C. dining room, repurposed from porch columns from a nearby centuries old home. These could be sourced at an architectural salvage store. I think I'll check out Sarasota Architectural Savage this coming week.

Here are some ideas if you'd like to re-create this dining room yourself.

The dining room I featured is from Frederic magazine - a subscription is $48 for three issues. Wow. Do any of you subscribe? That is a bit pricey.

  1. Love this post. You can keep your ginger jars in place and from falling off by using Joe's sticky stuff. This is what I use. I know a lot of set designers and property masters use this in the movie/TV business because it comes off without harming either surface. You can buy it on Amazon https://www.amazon.com/Joes-Sticky-Stuff-2-65/dp/B00IRCORQG/ref=asc_df_B00IRCORQG/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=167143377764&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=11276544197358538859&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9010952&hvtargid=pla-304832888573&psc=1

    1. Thanks. I use Museum Wax. Neither would prevent what I was referring to, trust me.

  2. Great post as usual, I cannot bring myself to put jars and ceramics on the floor. In my mind the need to be placed on something, even if it is a pile of books. I have not done this on the floor.

    1. I agree with the exception of a massive ginger jar/temple jar. I have one that is way too large and heavy to be placed anywhere else. Smaller ones look silly on the floor.

  3. I adore that hanging light fixture in Miles Redd's decorated hallway. It appears as if the shade is made of fabric, but I'm not positive. The transition from the dining room into the living room by Marshall Watson is gorgeous. (Sorry Beth. I am digressing from your ginger jars on pedestals theme.) Great tips about using Joe's sticky stuff or museum wax to keep your breakables from falling, especially for one who lives in earthquake country!

  5. A different colour gimp will dress up my kitchen chairs. Great idea. Funny, one I don't like from Bunny. Off to the storage to bring home my pedestals. You are so busted. (Foo dogs, not birds) Preordered Dragons and Pagodas from Amazon. Have great hopes. Harrison Howard on his way from Caspari. Chic paper plates are a must if you share baked goods.

  7. I do also subscribe to Frederic, Schumacher's feature magazine. Produced with high quality, I enjoy reading it when it arrives. I have listened to a number of podcasts where Dara Caponigro is a guest. Just this past weekend, I listened to her discuss the magazine on the Chairish podcast.

Although not fan of the concrete seating in the AD photo above, I believe placing a desk in the living room is genius! Often it is most pleasurable to work from such a beautiful setting, rather than an "office".

    1. I agree, but I would have chosen a less clunky and heavy desk.
