I had to share this incredibly unique bathroom that interior designer Colleen Bashaw designed for her daughters. It combines industrial elements with chinoiserie, which is quite a rarity.
The pink chinoiserie wallpaper is a favorite of mine - Quadrille China Seas Lyford Pagoda in pink on white. I love how it includes palm trees and pagodas.

Then she toughens up the pink palette with a metal apothecary style vanity and industrial sconces by Urban Electric Company. A pair of black inlaid bone mirrors is a perfect contrast to the pink.
I love the pink patterned floor tiles. This bathroom is such a fun and modern mix and the color palette of pink and black is quite fabulous.
Speaking of palm trees, I ordered some new business cards last night. I wanted something simple and elegant with a palm tree. Palm trees are the perfect mix of chinoiserie and Florida, ideal for my new venue.

I remember my first time visiting the west coast of Florida exactly three years ago, and upon landing in Tampa, being blown away by the incredible beauty of the palm trees everywhere. I closed on my Venice home a year ago this week - July 8th. I have over a dozen palm trees in my garden and I have added many more potted palms and palm decor inside and out.
The palm branch is a symbol of victory, triumph, peace, and eternal life originating in the ancient Near East and Mediterranean world. The palm (Phoenix) was sacred in Mesopotamian religions, and in ancient Egypt represented immortality. (Wikipedia) In the hurricane the other night, I loved watching the incredible resilience of the palm trees - they bend and sway in strong winds, but after the storm passes, they are just fine.
The bathroom is wonderful. I like the mix very much. Your new cards are so elegant.
ReplyDeleteI think too many designers think they have to use a faux bamboo vanity with chinoiserie wallpaper and it is too much. Nice to see a fresh approach.

ReplyDeleteThe bathroom is an adventurous mixing of styles. I like the wallpaper, tiles, and LOVE those mirrors. The vanity and its hardware don’t work for me, though. They look too commanding and almost clunky and draw my eyes to them more than the other beautiful choices.
I like the fresh approach - there are alternatives with chinoiserie wallpaper to the ubiquitous faux bamboo vanity. I like the thinking outside the box.
DeleteI love palm trees. They do conjure up a certain balmy, "tropicalness", if there is such a word. They are not native to California, though many people assume they are. Many were brought to Los Angeles decades ago when that city was first being developed. Like everything that is Hollywood, they wanted to create a more tropical and exotic ambience.
