A New Day

Thank you all so much for you wonderfully supportive comments and emails yesterday. As one commenter said that loved "You've Got This." Trust me to handle things prudently.

A few great developments from yesterday.

I met several new neighbors and was invited to join a nightly wine hour in a neighbor's driveway - bring your wine and chair - sounds like a great way to meet neighbors and social distance. I do not own a folding chair though - hahahaha. A new purchase I think. Is there a chic version? And my Mark and Graham rattan monogrammed wine tote.

I received in the mail yesterday this very Florida pink Palm Springs kimono from Anthropologie.

Palm Springs Kimono

I decided to store some of my blue and white porcelain in the pantry in the kitchen for a few days and fell in love. Thinking of upgrading the shelves and taking the door off and keeping it as there is another pantry for food items.

What's for dinner?

On Monday the painters are doing touch-up, cleanup, and finishing the mirror frame in the dining room. Tuesday the countertops are installed, and Wednesday the movers. I need to squeeze in a food run as the only food in the new house is dog food. Wednesday, my first night in the new house will be sushi from Publix. Publix has brought back $5 Sushi Wednesday and I pick up sushi every single Wednesday. It is fantastic - try it if you are near a Publix. I have the cutest coral pink chopsticks I use, not  a fan of the free wooden ones, and of course blue and white Chinoiserie plates.

  1. Everything is falling into place nicely, so happy for you! Love the small chinoiserie pantry idea. Maybe a French door as replacement for the current bi-fold? Just my 2 cents. PS we will finally be getting a Publix here in Our little country town. We're all looking forward to their arrival!

  2. Everything is coming together nicely! I am so happy for you. Love the chinoiserie pantry idea. A glass door would be nice, and you could add wallpaper to the back wall, or paint the inside of the pantry pink!

  4. Thinking about you every day. I will share your joy on Wednesday.I'm sure you don't need another story of someone like you who has been through the same thing. My story was with a Wall Street bond trader."They" are all over the place sucking in good people who don't deserve the grief.Moving on and living a great life is the best revenge.

Your idea of changing the shelves to store your blue and white porcelain is very good. We have the exact same shelving in our pantry in FL and they collapse eventually from the heat, humidity, temp changes, and age. We have replaced every single shelf in our large pantry- but only after each one collapsed at either 2 AM while we were fast asleep and thought a bomb went off or while we were on a cruise and came home to find everything crashed and smashed on the floor. The screws the original shelves are attached to in the wall eventually become loose. It's too risky to leave anything valuable on them as is. New framing was needed to make them more secure.

    Be safe and well!

  5. Hello from Naples, FL! I recently discovered your blog through a friend as we were discussing our favorite Home Goods here, and if it weren't for all the afternoon downpours we've been having recently, I would have made a 100-mile dash up to your favorite HG in Sarasota earlier this week. Reading your posts brings me back to when I was involved in a charity at the Jersey Shore who did a fabulous show house each summer. I always loved the dramatic mix of designers, home owners, contractors and other assorted folks as we prepared for the month it was open to the public. Never a dull moment! I always thought it would make a great reality show. Driveway happy hour is a real thing here. You will enjoy! Here's a link to a folding chair you may like, although lots of people just sit in their beach or camp chairs. It's a little pricy but you may like it. https://www.theinside.com/products/cabana-chair-henna-cheetah-by-scalamandre-10598 Good luck with the rest of the move! I'll be watching and keeping my fingers crossed that all goes according to your plans.

  6. This is a great report! Your new home will be a wonderful haven. So happy that you are meeting neighbors already. We had a front yard socially distanced happy hour with friends yesterday as well.

  7. Love the blue and white shelving idea! And your pink kimono is fabulous!! We are holding church outdoors in hot, humid SC, everybody brings their own chair. I just had back surgery 10 days ago, so no way can I sit in those tailgating chairs that fold up! If you come up with a chair, let us know. Counting down to Wednesday for you!

  8. Smooth sailing from here on in! Love the idea of your blue and white displayed in the pantry closet. Putting a display light in the closet would really show them off. Have you ever considered hiring a professional lighting consultant, Beth? Probably not at this point, as you are already deep into painting, and that would add a significant amount of money to your budget. I've always wanted to do that, and hope to, as soon as I get past some hurdles. French doors would be pretty, or you could go with those shutter style doors if you wanted the option of closing things off.

    1. I have a friend who keeps 8 of these tucked away in a closet, sometimes one never knows when a group materializes beyond the seating capacity of one's dining room. Let's call it emergency seating! https://www.walmart.com/ip/Flash-Furniture-4pk-American-Champion-Bamboo-Folding-Chair/55208805

  12. This one does not fold BUT at this price you can afford to get a can of Crylon and spray paint it coral or green or something wonderful. I just LOVE this chair!

  13. I'm not sure that this would be chic but a very popular chair is the GCI Outdoor Firepit Rocker Portable Folding Low Rocking Chair. I see that it is now temporarily out of stock on Amazon. I love the kimono and the closet idea. Good luck!

  14. I think anon above had terrific comments about the ultimate failure of these kind of wire racks. I installed them in my son's bedroom and my office closet and both failed to meet the test of time. More than once I muttered,"Where's a damn stud when you need it!" Wall anchors are an abomination. That was three decades ago when I turned to freestanding Metro shelving and I have never looked back. Hopefully in your blue and white display area there are studs available to secure the upgraded shelving. And after you move in, you may find yourself raiding your blue and white collection to place in other other rooms. As for folding chairs, I like director's chairs. The seats are more comfortable than most. Counting the hours until you are kicking back with sushi and champagne. All the best.

    1. I have used Metro shelving for years - love it. The blue and white pantry is just a holding area really, for vases, candlesticks, and the like and will get used and moved around. A director's chair is a great idea - I had bamboo ones.
