Chinoiserie Gone Wrong

Scale & An Accident Waiting To Happen

I just had to post this. It made me cringe. The room is o.k., not great, but what in the world is that triple gourd Chinese lamp doing sitting on a Chinese garden stool?

*First, the garden stool is too small for any lamp.
*Second, the garden stool is too low for lighting while sitting on the settee or any piece of furniture for that matter.
*Third, the lampshade is too small and its style does not work at all with this lamp.
* Fourth, it must be a magical lamp, because there is no electrical cord.
*Fifth, it is an accident waiting to happen, one bump and the lamp is on the floor.

How could anyone think this looks right? They should have put the lamp on the desk in place of that dinky metal thing. The garden stool and the lamp are both nice pieces, but don't belong on top of each other. And those green pillows are ugly and don't work either. I think someone decided the room needed pops of green and didn't really think it through.

Love it? Hate it? Thoughts?

BTW, I love all the thought that has gone into your comments. Bright, funny, informative - a really nice diversion. Thank you!

  1. Agree with your assessment. Too much activity in the corner and not enough at the desk. Need different cushion in the chair and the pillows need to go.

  2. I agree, there is a lot that needs correcting. I also think there is a need for pieces with more height with that very tall ceiling.

  3. All of the furniture looks to small for the room!

    1. I agree, too small and too low. "Honey, I Shrunk the Furniture."

  4. The lamp also has a "harp issue" a shorter harp would have really helped even with the too small shade. Wrong size shade harps are a personal pet peeve of mine; they can make or break a lamps appearance. Next.... why the heck is a upholstered bench that belongs at the end of a bed sitting against that tremendous wall?? And about the topiary.... don't get me started..... Signed Cranky in Captivity

    1. You have a thing with harps, I have a thing with lampshades. I think in the United States, we use shades that are too small. The aesthetic in Europe and especially the U.K. is larger lampshades. There is a delightful lamp store in Alexandria where I lived for decades and the late owner and I would always have a friendly debate when I would bring in a lamp. I think everything in the room is scaled wrong for that very high ceiling. Stay safe!

    1. I agree, I thought it would be piling on, but not much to like here.

  6. I agree that the placement of the lamp on the stool is awkward and the shade is either too high or too small for the lamp. Not a fan of "puddled" curtains, actually not sure if these curtains are just too long or are meant to be puddled?? The upholstered bench is lonely there on the wall. Would you sit there often? Probably not. Maybe in a doctor's office waiting room? Hehe.

    1. Yes, the curtains are awful. I also dislike the carpet. This kind of feels like a hotel room.

  8. I think the photographer realized the corner needed something to make it look fuller so they looked around the house and grabbed the garden stool. When that still didn't look right, they grabbed the first lamp they came to and placed it on the garden stool. Then they realized the green lamp color looked wrong so they grabbed those green pillows from another room in the house and plopped them on the settee. Then they crossed their fingers and hoped for the best.

    1. I love your comment. So funny and likely so true. Styling/staging on the run.

  9. Is this a room that was actually done by a decorator? I'm wondering if the room may just be in a transitional phase and not completed. That's the only reason I can thing of that would explain why everything looks off. Hmmm...

    1. Not a room in process - this was from a very recent professional photo shoot featuring this room.

  10. Taken independently from the room, I think the lamp and the shade are really attractive, although you're right, the shade is definitely too small for the lamp, and is in a very precarious position.

    1. Yes, shorter harp, larger shade, but not a fan of that shade paired with that lamp anyway.

  11. Totally agree with you. I believe the "bad" thinking was that the color of the lamp - a kind of teal - pulls out that color in the pillows. So instead, if they wanted to pull in another color then simply change the pillows and do away with the lamp.

  13. I think the pillows are -pillow shams- from the same room the lamp is from. Just another I think it will work gone wrong.

    1. Yes, perhaps they should have stood back a minute and looked at it and regrouped.

  14. Also, there's the plant next to the garden stool. Two round items make it appear crowded in that corner, which is right next to the desk and on the other side, the settee. Too, too much going on there. I wonder what the rest of the room looks like. I also would've put the picture up higher. If anyone with height sits on that settee, they lean straight back into the frame.

You're right about the pillows. I would've put a long lumbar pillow in the back of the settee.

Was this really done by a professional? Ouch!

    1. An excellent point on too many round items - the topiary itself, its container, the garden stool, the lampshade, and triple gourd makes 7 visually! And yes on the art, especially with that very tall ceiling. And a long lumbar would be perfect.

  15. The big square pillows look awkward on the bench..

    1. I agree, Ann Marie suggests a long lumbar - a great idea.

  16. I'm always amazed at what a perfect eye you have, Beth. I looked at that room and though 'ewwwww'...... what is that awful lamp (I hate the shade) doing on that stool that is way too little for a lamp. And sure enough, I then read your blurb and that is exactly what you focused on!!
