Did you get that massive Restoration Hardware Spring 2012 catalog in the mail this week? It weighs as much as my dog! I have really fallen in love with their new Dumpster Collection. In this economy, it makes so much sense to spend thousands and thousands of dollars, yet have your home look like you found the furniture on the side of the road. Reverse chic. Chairman and CEO of Restoration Hardware Gary Friedman says it was inspired by Apple's Steve Jobs, "void of dogma, full of passion, and most importantly, represents our aspirations for what we want to become." But, as distasteful and ridiculous as I found the so-called deconstructed collection, the RH outdoor catalog which was delivered in the same bundle, has some gorgeous real (not plastic) planters that I haven't seen elsewhere. See pp. 232-234 especially.

Very clever!! I agree the outdoor collection is nice, but this attempt to recreate antiques that my first thought is to reupholster immediately, is a bit much!! If I want burlap deconstructed antiques then I will wait for Brimfield Antique fair and then tastefully recover them in a simple flax linen..Great Post!!!
ReplyDeleteI slept in and am still waking up. The confusion of the ugliness being on CC was quite a shock until I started reading. This is the type of stuff I really can't stand. And there'll be so many people who think that since it's in Restoration Hardware it must be just the thing. I have no idea of pricing, but I'm guessing you have to pay a pretty penny for furniture and accessories this bad.

ReplyDeleteI just have to say that I totally disagree with your view here. I too got the catalogs in the mail, and I was totally disappointed! As an artist and designer, I see a grey, oat and beige landscape of monochromatic depression! Seriously - where is the life, the people, energy and surprise? Reflects the economy? Get the "dumpster" sofa for around $3000? While some accessories and lighting options are very nice, as well as the forms, my overall take away was - this collection needs an anti-depressant!
