One of my favorite wall treatments for the Chinoiserie room is grasscloth. Green, environmentally friendly, elegant, textural, warm, and sophisticated, it can be made from sea grass, jute, hemp, arrowroot, rush, sisal, or bamboo. It is particularly great in new houses where it gives much needed instant character. Grasscloth comes in every color and can be found screen printed or embroidered in countless or even custom patterns. Interior designers adore the papers of Phillip Jeffries. Above is a room by Meg Braff.
Each time the use of grass cloth really did transform the rooms above. Stunning images!
ReplyDeleteOoooh....that gray Mary McDonald paired with the gold pineapple/gray shaded lamp has me swooning! I NEED a project using grasscloth!
ReplyDeleteI love grasscloth, especially in a vibrant color -- it adds so much texture to a room. I also like it when the grasscloth is hung so the pattern runs vertically; it adds a whole new level of interest and can really make ceilings look taller.
ReplyDeletePS - I am, apparently, as bad at taking a vacation from blogging as I am at taking a vacation from work!
I love this post!
ReplyDeleteI have burlap wall covering in my family room and Phillip Jeffries raffia in my bedroom and absolutely love the feel they lend to those spaces! Expensive but a huge bang for the buck!
I have the same exact mirror as the green one in photo #7 but it's gold leaf. I never considered it could be transformed in such a manner! Even though it's fabulous in green, I'm not sure I could do it :)
Thanks for the wonderful inspiration!

Fabulous examples of the diversity of grasscloth. It is such a classic....every house needs it!
ReplyDeleteLove the sustainability factor and the dimension grasscloth brings to a room. All gorgeous examples! xo kitty
ReplyDeleteLove all these images - so inspiring and beautiful colours too! thanks.....KG
ReplyDeleteI love grasscloth. I also like some of the updated versions with graphics. The Suzanne Kasler dining room is stunning. I found inspiration for my own dining room from that design.
ReplyDeleteI really am enjoying your beautiful blog.
You know my aunts house was covered in 80's grasscloth, it is so removed, but now so in vogue.
ReplyDeleteI love it though, the texture and the natural colors.

Grasscloth is my favorite and I'm SO glad you posted this, because I was wondering if you knew of a vendor that was more on the economical side?
ReplyDeleteGrasscloth is my favorite when it is used on walls. My friend has it in her two upstairs bathrooms and I hadn't seen it in person before this. Using it as "wallpaper" is a great alternative to using it as a rug! (sometimes grasscloth isn't the coziest on your feet!)
ReplyDeleteGreat post on grasscloth. I love the texture it can give to a room. I personally think it is a classic, I remember it was very in vogue in the late 70s and it is nice to see it coming around again. Fun Post,Kathysue
ReplyDeleteLovely images...thanks for sharing! I love grasscloth, when done right it is timeless, elegant and provides subtle sophistication to a room! I recently used a tone on tone glasscloth in a client's foyer and the result is beautiful.
ReplyDeletethanks for this inspiring post..I have been considering grasscloth for a client guest room, and these images make a wonderful case for their beauty. I think it gives a quieter feel to a room, too.

ReplyDeleteAmanda-Virtually every wallpaper manufacturer has a book of textural wallcoverings with grasscloths and there are all different price points. You'll find ones you like.
