Mahjong Comes to CCC

Chinoiserie Mahjong Tiles

Cards and games are wildly popular here in Florida. There are events at my clubhouse literally all the time. And mahjong has gone viral in recent years.

Between September 2024 and August 2025, U.S. searches for mahjong clubs on Yelp increased by over 4,400%, while lessons rose more than ninefold.

Cities like San Francisco and New York are experiencing a surge in pop-up, cafe, and park meetups, replacing, or complementing, traditional social activities like trivia nights.

The game is moving past its image as only for seniors, with many young adults adopting it as a regular hobby.

Online and app-based versions allow for easy learning and remote play, introducing the game to new audiences.

Once popular with octogenarians, it is now very popular with celebrities, social influencers, and folks of all ages and sectors. And it has become popular with men as well as women. I have never been a player of cards or games ever. But since mahjong originated in China and I find the tiles so beautiful, I have been increasingly interested in learning to play.

Well yesterday I decided to find a local class and everything is sadly booked for months. So I ordered this very pretty set of mahjong tiles yesterday and they are on their way to CCC. It had me at monkeys, parasols, blue and white ginger jars, and pagodas. I will start doing some online lessons while I search for local classes. Where I live, there are mahjong groups that play right at my clubhouse once I get up to speed.

Chinoiserie Mahjong Tile Set

So I will be posting occasionally on the pretty chinoiserie mahjong accessories I find and how my new adventure is coming along. I did find a dollhouse mahjong set too!

Leave a comment if you are a mahjong player with any tips or advice. I definitely need a lucite box next to display these beautiful Chinoiserie Chic tiles. I must admit that at this point, I am more interested in how pretty the mahjong sets are than actually playing, but I hope I will get into it as I learn. My schedule really doesn't need anything else on it, but taking up a new hobby sounds fun.

  1. You will love mahjong! These beautiful tiles look excellent with the OMM Capri mat and tortoise shell racks. No I don't work for Oh My Mahjong but I am a fan ;)

  2. I’ve played for 23 years and love it. Do not get discouraged if you don’t grasp all of the rules immediately. I’m a lifelong player of cards and games, and it took me several weeks to fully understand the play of the game.

    1. I usually pick things up very quickly (hopefully) because I am not patient at all.

  4. The tile set is pretty. Unfortunately, OMM has a disappointing track record with delamination as well as very poor customer service and I have chosen not to purchase from them. I also don’t favor the short chunky tiles like theirs as they are difficult to keep on the rack—I enjoy the taller thinner tiles 😊 I love Mahjong and there has been an explosion of tile companies and the selection of tiles has become vast! I now have five sets!

    1. A long story, but mine are not OMM. These are taller and thinner than the OMM. Since this is my first set that I frankly bought because of the design, these will be mostly for display. I do not plan on hosting at CCC at this time and the classes and groups I am interested in you do not bring your own. So this will be a bit of a learnig curve for me as far as tiles. I too have read what you are saying about OMM. Some love them and others not at all. I have read great things about several other companies.

  5. Beth, I am the same way. I find something beautiful that is irresistible, that I have to have, then I find a use for it. The Mahjong tiles are beautiful. I can see how you couldn't pass them up.
