Happy Halloween

CCC

Happy Halloween to all! I love Halloween and will be sad to put my Halloween decorations away, but it means that Thanksgiving and Christmas are right around the corner. It is actually quite fall-like here, just in the seventies for a couple of days. I am hosting a Thanksgiving wine tasting and food pairing a week from tonight for thirty people, so I need to start thinking about Thanksgiving. It will be a fun preview featuring wines that pair beautifully with your Thanksgiving meal. Enjoy trick or treaters or whatever you will be doing tonight.

  1. Happy Halloween, Beth. Your front porch looks very decked out. Sadly, we don't get trick or treaters in my neighborhood anymore, and haven't for a very long time. I really miss the little ones. They were always so adorable.

I can't wait to see your Thanksgiving and Christmas decorations. I'm debating whether or not to put up a tree this year. For the first time in my life, I am all by myself. It's challenging living alone in a big, old house. Traditionally, we did very large trees - about nine and a half feet - in the living room, as it's a huge room, and a small tree looks rather silly, but I don't know if I have the courage to take it on all by myself. Still, it's never really Christmas for me without a tree. Hope your party is a sensation. Cheers!

    1. Lisa, I couldn't bear to do the rituals for a dozen years, after losing someone dear to me during the holiday period. But last November, I roused myself to try again anyway, b/c I realized these annual opportunities to enjoy the season are on the wane. So, I prepared an entire Thanksgiving feast for myself alone, and then, soon after, bought a Christmas tree, a little artificial one. It cheered me to decorate it and have it up for the last of November and all of December. I even kept it up through a good bit of January! A four-footer, despite having had larger ones in the past. My advice is to decorate for the season with however much seems reasonable. Perhaps you won't do as much as in years past, but that's okay. Your house will be merry and bright, and you'll make a new ritual in the doing.

    2. I agree with all the comments. Do whatever you feel comfortable with, but I think you will enjoy having some holiday decorations. One suggestion -artificial trees today look so real and the lights are amazing - no cords - you just fit the tree sections together and it all lights up. I did two large trees last year all my myself and setup could not have been easier. All that is missing is the tree smell and I burn wonderful frasier fir candles instead.

  3. Thank you all for the very kind and thoughtful comments. I do believe you are right. It's important to celebrate this time of year in whatever ways make you feel good, and keeping up with family traditions is so important. I am so very blessed to have grown up in a family where I had amazing parents, brothers, and a huge extended family where we got together all the time, not just on holidays. I have wonderful memories, and not everyone is as fortunate.
