The Week of the Turtle

Gilded Tortoise/Turtle Shell

I posted a few days ago about the darling raffia turtle I found at HomeGoods for the lanai. Yesterday I found this gold tortoise or turtle shell on a lucite base - it is by Lamp Couture and retails for $260 and I got it for free with some T.J.Maxx rewards $ I had. I have been looking for something like this for ages.

Thanks for the input on the Dash & Albert rug. I am thinking about the Catamaran in the platinum and white stripes for the lanai - my lanai has a British Colonial vibe and is reminding me of my favorite Bunny Williams room just a tad so I was thinking about this rug similar to hers.

I'm still playing around with the sizing, but the colors would be perfect with my walls and floors. I do not want to cover up my beautiful floors in the house, but the lanai floor is not tiled and this would be a nice look.

Do any of you have blogs on Blogger? They are forcing everyone into a new interface that is absolutely dreadful with all sorts of glitches. It's like New Coke. If it ain't broke....

  1. I like the rug, I am sure it will look nice in your lanai. Can't wrap my mind around an outdoor rug (personal hangup, nothing more) but have loved how it looked in many different settings. My hangup, btw, has to do with keeping it clean, not with the way it looks. The perfect rug can pull everything together as evidenced by Bunny Williams' photo. LOVE, LOVE! (Bunny rocks) Love how that casual, simple rug goes so well with the palm prints on the wall and how it "grounds" everything in that room. Without it it would be a collection of things floating around (still terrific, though) but with it, it's a defined, cosy space. In general, I tend to like simple rugs like that paired with more sophisticated decor.

Much the same way, the D&A Catamaran Stripe photo is so cozy and pretty and the rug really takes it to a higher level of finish. (I love the color, btw.)

Looking forward to the evolving lanai and other parts of the house and garden.

    1. Totally agree with Delta's comment on how an area rug "grounds" everything in that room. Without it . . . "

    2. Delta - I have never had an outdoor rug, and am not a rug person at all, but the lanai floor is concrete and no way I am dealing with redoing it right now. My rug concern is with the driving sideways tropical rains, it getting constantly wet and dirty and having to babysit it.

    3. Rivagrant - I dislike most rugs and MUCH prefer beautiful bare floors, especially in a tropical climate like this. I think most rugs are cheesy and bring down the room, but I don't think that's what's meant by grounding.

  3. Love your turtle find and love the rug. My D&A rug is the same stripe in spring green and white. I love it!

  4. Love the gilded tortoise shell. I have a rug outside and it's made for outdoors. It gets dirty and I hose it off or vacuum it. I wouldn't recommend an indoor rug outside in Florida. They get filthy and the sun rots them. I have rugs on my marble flooring to pull rooms together. Otherwise with an open plan furniture just looks like it's floating aimlessly.

Also I was on Blogger and switched to Wix quite awhile ago after trying Wordpress.

    1. Question about your outdoor rug: once you vacuum it and hose it down, how does it dry? What happens to moisture trapped between the rug and the ground/floor surface?

I am leary of mold and mildew and afraid to risk it. Thanks!

    2. Delta - you would hose it down and let it dry outside on the lawn or driveway.

    3. Sharon - The post was about Dash & Albert polypropylene which are indoor/outdoor. No mention of using an indoor rug.

  5. I hear you on the "blogger" interface that suddenly decides [without user input] to make it BETTER [Worse]! Same is happening with Facebook. As to the lanai rug, don't cringe but have you considered painting the concrete floor to simulate the rug stripes? There are dedicated concrete floor paints for such applications. Again, I hear you on the "I don't want to babysit the rug," which is why I propose simulating the rug stripes by painting them onto the hard surface. As a fellow Floridian, I'd hate trying to keep after [babysit] the molds and algaes that naturally appear on outdoor surfaces in this environment.

    1. Polypropylene will not grow mold or mildew when wet. I considered painting the concrete, but am convinced I will not like it. The new interface is like New Coke.
