Saturday Inspiration

Jenny Keenan - Southern Living

I really like the mix of blue and white Chinese porcelain and blue and white ikat in this living room of a South Carolina beach house. Note the seashells in the acrylic trunk - that's a neat idea. I want to do more with seashells here. I have a lot, but haven't put most of them out yet. My ikat collection is growing - my new Schumacher ikat ginger jar and a few ikat caftans that I am literally living in.

Look at this collection of Bunny Williams seashells. That's what I need, a seashell drawer. LOL

Here is lovely table styling of my Mercer dining table (but with the marble top). Who knows what the flowers are? The name is on the tip of my tongue but my perennials encyclopedia got left behind at guess where....

Two more things. My wallpaper installation I had hoped for yesterday turned into a text from my installer that he broke his leg and is out of commission for two months. Do any of my local followers know a good wallpaper hanger? Help!!!!!!!

Lastly, I have a really neat idea for the lanai that involves a Dash & Albert polypropylene indoor/outdoor rug. They get great reviews, but are pretty pricey in the larger sizes I am thinking about. Any experiences you can share?

My beloved Alexandria, Virginia had flash flooding on Thursday with many homes flooded. The pictures are unbelievable. Weather is getting crazy everywhere.

Have a great day everyone.

  1. Beth, There is a set of Ballard Designs bar stools like yours, except bar height for sale on Craigslist in Tampa. Wanted to let you know in case you were still thinking about solutions for your bar stool height.

  2. I love the blue and green garden stool in the very first photo-green and blue😍
Have you tried thumbtack for a wallpaper guy? We’ve been pretty lucky finding tradesman on there - also Nextdoor has yielded some good leads.

    1. Yes, tried both. No luck. But I have found two elsewhere I am calling tomorrow. Thanks.

  3. I have a friend who sells those Dash and Albert rugs in her store and she swears by them. Says they are impervious to anything, can be hosed off but look like wool and feel great. I have another friend who put one in her kitchen and I couldn’t believe it wasn’t wool. I’m thinking about one for my kitchen too.

  4. LOVE the Southern Living set up. My most favorite part is those curtains hanging on bamboo rods followed by the traditional prints and the table set-up. With tall white jars flowering branches bookending the blue and white porcelain. So inspired and casually elegant.

  5. I have an Annie Selke/Dash and Albert poly rug. Colors are vibrant and rug is well made. Most easily cleaned with a power washer on a light pressure setting. Hand washing is fine for quick touch ups. Vacuums easily.

  6. I think that the flower is a Leucodendron. They are part of the Protea family. I am not sure of the common name, but I think it might be cone flower. I love the way Bunny has a collection of shell holders for place names.

    1. I wondered what those little silver-trimmed slits were, thank you!

    2. Thanks on the flower. I love the place card holders.

  7. That wallpaper installation situation makes me shake my head. I hope you can find someone reputable now that this one won't be available for awhile. Sad! I know you are ready to get on with it! And on the book left behind: I am sure you have already searched online to find a replacement. SB probably put any remaining vestiges of your presence in the garbage bin out of spite! Hope you get those Tampa stools! What a find!

    1. What can I say to all of it? Onward and upward....

  8. I have a large Dash and Albert indoor/outdoor rug. I love it! So many pretty details on this page!
I love the bamboo rods and trim on the drapes in the first picture. Love your ikat jar and dress, the happy orange handles on Bunny's flatware and those shells! In one book, I think one of Bunny's, there is a stunning vignette of shells including a sea fan on a Chippendale mahogany wall shelf I have thought about replicating. I loved the details you provided yesterday about growing orchids in trees. Thank you for the info.

    1. Thanks - I love seashells used in interesting ways - I will have to look for that vignette.

  9. I think I would pay up and get the quality Dash and Albert with all of the money you have saved at HG!You know it's going to last, is easy to maintain and has quality details. Sometimes a bargain is in how long it lasts and how perfect it is for the task (I know you know this)! I, too, love the bamboo rods, but I would either have (or have done) painted the hardware to match the bamboo, or used lucite. The black seems a bit stark to me. Have a great day and watch out for those killer racoons.Ha!

    1. The issue is not really the price, but the look. I hate polypropylene, but the Dash and Albert sound much more upscale. I agree on the black brackets. Antique Drapery Rod Company has great choices BTW.

  10. The ikat pattern you share in the fabrics and jar is lovely, especially the blue.

Have you been out to Captiva/Sanibel Islands as of yet? It would be a nice day trip for you and the shelling there is wonderful. Probably anywhere on the gulf beach would be fruitful or "shellful" for you. I walk lots on the beach and cannot resist picking up shells even though I have many. It is can be particularly great right after storms/hurricanes when the water has been churned up.

I believe I mentioned in another posting that I have several DA rugs which I love. In my kitchen I have two that were designed by none other than Bunny Williams. They are actually made of recycled plastic bottles, wash well, vacuum well and are quite stylish.

    Enjoy your weekend!

    1. PS. I read somewhere where Annie Selke named her line of rugs for her two pups Dash & Albert, aka Queen Victoria's pup and her husband! I believe if you register on her website you will receive 10 - 15% off your first order. Hope this helps.

    2. Yes, Dash and Albert are named after her Clumber Spaniel and Bassett Hound. They do give 15% off your first order, but charge sales tax so I can do better elsewhere.

I have been meaning to go out to Sanibel, but they don't have a dog beach like here. I want to take the pups.

  11. I really like the Dash and Albert rugs. I just got rid of one after 7 years which I think is a long time with 2 kids, 2 days, and 2 dogs ( not all at once). I hosed it off outside several times and let it air dry. I have a runner that ive had for 10 years in my laundry room that cleans up so well.
I've pretty much given up on all other rugs due to pets and kids- one less thing to clean.

    1. That's how I feel here with rugs - I have two long haired dogs, my tile is too gorgeous to cover, and I love the look. But the lanai is not tiled and I think it would be a nice look for there - I posted today on the rug I like.

  12. Love the bamboo curtain rods! Any idea where to find those?
