My Front Door

My Front Door

This is the front door of the Florida house - I had my painter repaint the front doors in a glossy black, added this Pottery Barn lighting fixture I have wanted for years, and hung this very chic lion door bell.  I bought him twenty year ago for my house in Alexandria, Virginia and it did not work there. I love it here.

I love my door bell!

And look who was trying to come in last night -

I was just asked to serve on the Landscape Committee in my community and my first meeting is Monday - by Zoom of course. I personally nixed meeting in person. I am really enjoying gardening in Florida - here is my home.

  1. Your house is lovely. Will enjoy hearing about your adventures on the Landscaping Committee. This is a great place to learn lots about plantings and gardening in Florida. Tree frogs or spring peepers which I like to call them, love hanging around the front door as the light is no doubt on all night. All those bugs that gather there will be dinner for the little guy. During the day, they typically sleep in the light fixture or just behind it. Unfortunately, they leave behind little "droppings" that can be very icky. Also, when a rain comes up, they sing for you!

    1. Thank you - yes the back is prettier than the front with the pool and lake.

  4. How perfectly beautiful! It’s certainly more than a house, more like an estate - with it’s sprawling grounds, parking lodge and isn’t there a cabana in the rear?!

    1. Thank you so much. Yes, there is a large lanai in the back with a pool, spa, and outdoor kitchen and it is steps from a beautiful lake.

    1. Yes, I love that the house has an upstairs. There is a double staircase that leads to a huge living room with balcony that overlooks the pool and lake, and two guest bedrooms and bath. That fretwork balcony is off one of the guest bedrooms.

  6. Ooh...it's so pretty. It appears as though you have a party crasher who thinks so too. I'm curious to know what the doorbell sounds like.

    1. LOL. The doorbell is based on an English antique one and it is just a traditional chime - it doesn't roar.

    1. Thank you so much. I love it too. It's just my style - Florida but formal and not Tuscan which I do not care for.

  8. Very elegant and beautiful and the glossy black door is simply perfect. The blue and white touches make it sing. Good luck with that committee thing.I'm just too old to deal with helping herd cats—getting adults to consensus! Have you read the novel,"Dear Committee Members"? While it is in an academic setting, people are people!!!
That frog scared the bejusus out me.

    1. Thank you so much. I will have to hunt down that book. Yes, I have concerns about the committee - I am joining because I think I could do a great job upgrading things, but it may be an exercise in frustration - we will see.

    2. I had to share that the meeting was yesterday of the Landscape Committee and I resigned today. "This is not a Landscape Committee, but a Ladies Garden Club from the 1950s." Mic drop...........

  9. I'm absolutely floored! What a fantastic house! When people say the grass is greener on the other side, they must be talking about your house! Everything looks so lush and beautiful. What a perfect setting for YOU, Beth! And that doorbell is gorgeous! Wishing you lots of happiness in your beautiful house going forward!

    1. You are so nice. Thank you. The garden and grass were absolutely horrible 6 months ago when we moved in. I will have to post before pictures.

  11. Hi Beth!
I am also a blue and white/chinoiserie lover! Since we both live in Florida I’ll call us neighbors as well! I so much enjoy seeing the things that I love and collect being shown in the same surroundings that I also live in! Love, love, love it!

    2. We live in On Top of the World, Ocala, Florida. Horse Capital of the world. It’s different than living by the coast, we are surrounded with huge horse land, live oaks and lots of shopping(normally). It’s a 55 community with lots of amenities. But of course one of our favorite places in Florida is Sanibel! We go as often as we can to shell! We moved here from a lifetime spent in Western Pennsylvania, right in the snow belt. Needless to say we don’t miss it, happy to be in the Sunshine state!

    3. So interesting. Where I am in Sarasota I am surrounded by horse and cattle farms and tons of live oaks - my community has hundreds - I have a dozen on my property. I was expecting palms everywhere - not live oaks!

    4. We love Sarasota! Siesta Key was our first vacation to Florida and the love story began! Our Daughter lives in Wesley Chapel just north of Tampa. As northern transplants neither did we imagine horses and cattle and all of the agriculture here, I guess we only visited the beach. Florida is a lovely state with a great history and great weather! Love your blog!
