I did this recently as I had a new custom upholstered headboard made. It is quite substantial and has some good depth to it. The standard bed frame is just pushed up to the mounted headboard. There is no banging on the wall or wobbling. The mattress and box springs then went on a standard bedframe that isn't attached to anything. It's actually handy when you want to move the mattress from the wall to dust behind it. In the end I attached it to the wall with brackets at the exact height I wanted. An unexpected bonus is that it doesn't creak as antique headboards often do.
