A Chinoiserie Dining Room/It's A Small World

Shazalynn Cavin-Winfrey - Traditional Home

On Sunday I posted on the color coral. Earlier last week, I posted on a stunning lacquered emerald green solarium/bar in Greenwich, Connecticut by interior designer Shazalynn Cavin-Winfrey.

Her unique name rang a bell, so I researched on CC, and low and behold, I had posted about this dining room by this same interior designer in 2014. Note the coral breakfront. And what's really interesting is that she is based in Alexandria, Virginia (where I lived for 30 years) and this was from a D.C. show house that I attended.

And there is more. We were neighbors - she and her family lived in my old neighborhood of Belle Haven just up the street from us and her business is based in nearby (5 minutes away) Old Town where my late husband's law firm was located. Small world. BTW, I was very interested in her unique first name - she attributes it to being the child of hippie parents. Funny.

This room is a wonderful example of how to update a formal dining room to make it more fresh and modern. Note the breakfront painted coral, the corner banquette in salmon velvet, the ceiling wallpapered in marble, the pagodas flanking the fireplace, and the painted dining room chair frames. The chinoiserie fabric on the dining chairs is Cowtan & Tout La Pagode Chine. I had that same beautiful striped silk taffeta she uses on the curtains in my Alexandria home.

Thanks so much for all your ideas on my chinoiserie mystery from yesterday's post - you all solved it. I will update this in tomorrow's post as the story takes all kinds of twists and turns and is very interesting.

  2. Beautiful dining room with the pink/coral china cabinet and the upholstery on the chairs, and that wall color behind the banquette is one of my favorite colors. I don't know what to call it - a pink/apricot? Sometimes it appears to be more in the orange direction, sometimes more pink, but I know it every time I see it. Yes, the silk draperies are gorgeous, but I'm sure you would have to have a window without much direct sun exposure.

    1. I had silk draperies for twenty years on most windows in my last house and there are all sorts of tricks to reduce fading from interlining to blackout lining to blinds to deep stack backs. I never had problems. I love apricot on walls and it's gorgeous in high gloss.
