Mario Buatta

Mario Buatta

A stunning but to me rare space by Mario Buatta in that it is largely black and white sans his usual color. The painted wood floors are wonderful. I am a sucker for a black and white checkerboard floor. This is the Charleston home of Patricia Altschul.

Note the black and gold Chinoiserie chest topped with a Chinese bowl.

A busy day yesterday at CCC. I had three gardeners here pruning all my hedges. Then my tile guys stopped by to look at the job - I have decided to have my front entryway tiled as well as the lanai.

  2. I have always been a fan of painted wood floors. What I particularly love about the example above is that 2 different but compatible patterns were used in the foreground and back and the border delineating each room. Stunning.

The tall chinoiserie chest is a lovely piece and so smart to use it there add height and substance to the room. To my sensibilities (subjective) I need to have at least one tall piece--be it bookcases, armoire, a chest like this one with something on top--anything to break the monotony of a lot of similarly sized, smaller pieces displayed around the room. And this vignette does it beautifully in a tasteful and restrained way.

  3. So smart to have your front entryway tiled at the same time as the lanai!
It'll add a unique and classy touch and it will open up all sorts of possibilities for accessorizing. Hopefully the HOA rules will not interfere.

  5. Gorgeous space. I've always loved Mario Buatta's work. I went to a lecture he gave at the San Francisco Fall Antiques Show in 2015, I think. I'm not sure. I remember him lamenting that they no longer taught much in the way of the classics in design school. I was fortunate enough to meet him, only for a second. He was charming and delightful. The world is a little less prettier with his passing.

  6. Haleh Atabeigi painted those floors and she did tons of work for Mario--it was match made in heaven.

Her work is absolutely amazing: http://www.halehpaint.com/
