Pillow Talk

CCC - My Annie Selke gold leaf pagoda canopy bed

One of my best purchases ever was my Annie Selke gold leaf pagoda canopy bed. And now with my Samsung Frame TV and my master suite overlooking a tropical jungle, (and not to mention a pandemic), I could pretty much live in my bed.

Hahahaha

I have the Heavenly Bed mattress and box spring that I love, and several luxurious sets of sheets. I especially love 100% linen sheets.

I need a new pair of great pillows and have always been a traditionalist with white goose down pillows. But today there is a bewildering array of choices with foam, down alternative, pillow in a pillow, etc. etc.

In doing research yesterday, Casper pillows and Coop pillows are both highly rated. The three that seem to keep coming up are Casper, Coop, and Brooklinen. Any experience with these or others? I would love pillow suggestions and any other tips you have on making the perfect bed. I would love to do a post compiling tips on making the perfect bed.

  1. I need to replace my goose down pillows as well so I'll be following this post closely for recommendations.

  2. I have a Casper mattress and their boxspring and 2 of their pillows which I love. They have kept their shape for the two years I have had them and are my go-to pillows.
I, too, love your beautiful bed and I notice we have the same needlepoint pillow that is hidden in the middle of your group of bed pillows. I have one on each of two wicker rockers and they are perfect. Enjoy your beautiful room and its garden surroundings.

  3. I have all sorts of pillows for all sorts of purposes (hard, medium, soft) but my favorite for sleeping on (yes, I've succumbed) is My Pillow. I bought one just to see what the buzz was all about, then bought 3 more once I found out. Super comfy, they keep their shape and come through the washer and dryer looking like new. And I like to wash the pillows I directly sleep on frequently.

I am not a fan of feathers and have stopped using them in anything once I discovered that they do not do well in the wash and clump in the dryer no matter what I do. But that's a personal thing.

I like classic, crisp white cotton sheets often with some sort of contrasting embroidery. I am a fan of monograms as well. I like to change the look from time to time but keep within a certain color theme. Currently it's white with a navy border, blue and white chinoiserie pillow cases and a white w/navy/blue monogrammed lumbar pillow. A pair of Euro shams, a pair of queen shams, a pair of standard pillow cases and a lumbar pillow is what I pretty much work with, often with variations on the sheet sets.

    1. I am the same with sheets - always white with or without embroidery and monograms. The My Pillow made me laugh.

  4. Your bed is gorgeous! I went to Annie Selke's site and see that it now comes only in a silver leaf finish. Still so pretty, but not quite as wow as your gold leaf finish. I look forward to your post about how to make a perfect bed---all the elements involved. We are on the hunt for new bed as we are moving from queen sized to king sized. We are considering a faux bamboo bed and have been looking at all available. Have your looked at them? I think they fit your chinoiserie aesthetic and would also make a good post.

    1. I agree, I do not like it in the silver finish. I can't use another bed - but I do like the look of bamboo beds. Have you looked at Amanda Lindroth?

  5. I have slept on down pillows since my grandmother made me one when I was a child. All of these comments about pillows keeping their shape make me think one thing--uncomfortable. What I love about down is that I can squish them into the shape that I need--mostly I'm a back sleeper, so I mush it into a neckroll. If I roll on my side I can cuddle it or get it to just the right height to keep my neck in line with my spine. I find foam pillows to be hard and unyielding to the point that I have a small down pillow that I can pack for travel, but also understand that down isn't for everyone. I wish you well in your pillow experiment, but know that I could never make the change. Love your bed (and the whole room, for that matter)!

    1. I love down too and am not looking at foam at all - I agree. But there are many other options out there that are very well rated.

  6. I was having some sore neck and shoulder issues and decided to give MyPillow a try. Much to my surprise within a few days the pain was gone. As Delta mentioned above, they wash beautifully. Many times I wake up to find my dachshund hogging my pillow!! I also like the idea they are made in the USA by veterans. I would love to know more about that unusual bolster on your bed. It is gorgeous!

    1. One of my dogs hogs my pillows. The bolster is silk and I have another matching smaller one on one of the chairs. They might be from One Kings Lane years ago.

  7. I have several sheet and duvet sets from Serena and Lilly and am constantly monitoring their sales for more. Such great quality inside and out--all seams beautifully finished, all embroidery solid and even.

Their show and tell on various ways to style your bed are terrific and I have tried a few. So much fun to switch things around depending on the style and pattern of linens you are using:

  9. I used to only sleep on goose down pillows. I have switched to the Caster pillow--the regular Casper pillow that sells for $65.00 in Target. I will never go back. I have four of them. I have had them for several years. The level of support they provide is perfect--not too firm, not too soft, just right. They have a pillow within a pillow and they launder beautifully. I highly recommend them.

I also love Casper percale sheets and PB 100% linen sheets. Love the ditty above! To stay in a beautifully made bed and relax is a treat!
    Have a beautiful day.

  13. That is a beautiful bed, and I almost bought one myself, but held off because I was not sure where I would be living, and did not want the expense of moving the bed after having had to move myself.

Interesting information from your readers about different mattresses and pillows. I have down pillows, but after having sustained a repetitive motion neck and shoulder injury, I bought a Temperpedic pillow at the suggestion of my doctor. It's pretty much lived it's life now, but was fabulous, and was just the ticket in relieving my neck pain. There is also a brand similar to Temperpedic called Technogel. It is memory foam, but does not have air pockets in it like the Temperpedic products do. Technogel makes mattresses, pillows, mattress toppers, etc., and for anyone who likes this kind of material to sleep on, or who has back or neck problems, I highly recommend checking them out. They are expensive, but once you lie down on a Technogel mattress or bed topper, you will think you have died and gone to heaven. You may have to go to a store that specializes in products for the back, such as a "Relax the Back" store.

I love down, and also have a down duvet, which is fabulous in the colder months. I always take my down duvet and pillows to have them professionally dry cleaned or laundered so I've never had a problem with clumping. There are lots of choices in down out there, so you really have to do some shopping around to find what you like and what meets your needs.

    1. Lots of good info - I have no neck or back problems and could sleep on the floor. I agree about down - I have down everything and have them professionally cleaned. They need to have a pillow store where you can try out everything - probably not with a pandemic though.

  14. I have a Stearns and Foster traditional mattress/box spring with a pillow top. I tried the Temperpedic and some other foam mattresses and ultimately rejected them because I like to sleep ON a mattress, not IN a mattress. The sensation of sinking into foam was disconcerting and made turning over too difficult. I have down pillows and several down comforters. Some are summer weight goose down and others have a higher fill count for winter. I send them to the laundry to be washed and dried, not dry cleaned. They say that washing is harder on goose down than dry cleaning as it removes some essential oils, but I've never had a problem.

    1. I agree - I cannot stand the feel of foam anything. Not even looking at foam. I have a summer weight goose down comforter and love it. I too have my down professionally cleaned.

  15. I use the Iso-Cool pillow which is memory foam with a cooling gel pad on one side. I don’t like hot pillows—having a cool pillow next to my face feels so much better. Dillard’s sells a look-alike cooling pillow.

  16. My “perfect bed” tip is to have a duvet cover made out of two sheets, with hidden zippers up the long sides. It eliminates the need for a tangly top sheet and can easily be washed like all your other sheets. I had two of these made from Matouk top sheets and they are soooo soft and comfy, plus it’s really easy to make the bed! I’ll link to a pic in my name.

  17. Love the bedroom but will you be adding some rugs? The tile looks so cold. Just wondering. Love down pillows and they wash/dry without problem. Just make sure your guests aren't allergic if you have them in your guest room. Also...love the quote!

    1. No rugs for me. I love my floors, don't want them covered, and this is Florida - tile being cool is a good thing. The pillows are for my bed - I will use down alternative in the guest bedroom.

  19. I love bare floors too. In the summertime they are heavenly, and if you have pets, they are much easier to keep clean. I am very fortunate to have hardwood floors throughout my house. (It's an old house, built in 1935, and that's just the way houses were built then.) However, the winters get pretty cold, and the rooms are very large, so without something on the floor, they can feel rather cold and cavernous, and can also be noisy with all the hard surfaces and nothing to absorb any sound.
