Chinoiserie Gone Terribly Wrong

Eric Cortina

I just received the new Gump's San Francisco holiday catalog today in the mail and these are on the cover. Crystal encrusted ginger jars for the holidays - $3,300.00 each. I have no words for how tacky these are. Lyrics from my favorite Annie Lennox song No More "I Love You's" are perfect here - "the language is leaving me in silence. " Speechless. Money and style are not the same thing. Poor ginger jars.

  1. They would be gorgeous if they removed those weird things glued on.

  3. It goes beyond taste and subjectivity it's plain old vulgar.

Perhaps the price alone is indication to some people that it's a worthwhile 'investment" but there's something sad about it.

  4. I remember when I was a teen waiting with excitement for Gump's and Neiman Marcus Christmas catalogs in the mail. Then I'd keep them around for ages, coveting all sorts of things in there, always a reminder of what's possible. Then at some point, if you're lucky, you realize it's not all that. But it was nice to fantasize about it at a time.

    1. The NM Christmas catalog is a shadow of its former self. It used to be filled with fantasy items and was beautiful visually.

  5. This would be easy enough to copy. If these become popular, it won't be long before you can find them at the dollar store.

  6. Maybe if they had taken temple jars in ONE off white colour and then ad the jewelry....that may not be so bad.

  7. Awful, awful, awful. Gump's has a very low opinion of it's customers taste level.

  8. There are no words for this travesty. Take a beautiful jar and trash it! I wonder how many they will sell?

  11. Having money doesn't mean you have taste. These are dreadful! Actually they are humorous-they made me laugh out loud before I read your post. They could have been in The Onion.... Happy Friday!

  12. Ok, I'll be the minority here, but I kind of like their flashy gaudiness. Not at $3000+, but kind of a fun sparkly thing to have around at the holidays. Maybe I'll bedazzle a cheap thrift store vase just for fun :)

  15. I laughed when I first saw this picture. It reminds me of the upside down Christmas trees that came on the scene a few years ago - both are so crazy, and make absolutely no sense. Talk about gilding the lily. Actually, I love blingy and sparkly, and I love blue and white ginger jars - just not all in the same place.

    1. I have had an upside down Christmas tree for many years and it is my favorite thing in the world. It takes up zero floor space and shows off prized ornaments perfectly because they hang away from the branches. It is my primary Christmas tree and gorgeous. Unfortunately, the POS stole mine along with all of my Christmas ornaments.

  16. Once again I can't agree with you more-OUCH! It reminds me of the worst of the 80s. Still glad that Gump's is trying to revive their brand despite this egregious error.

    1. Please don’t say anything about the 1980s. Maybe you didn’t like some of it but nothing in the 80s was as ugly as these things.

    2. Gump's has lost a few steps unfortunately.

  17. Still scratching my head.
If they wanted to go over the top but original, at least they could have used jewels to follow the existing pattern. (kind of like in mosaics) From afar it looks "normal", up close you see the various jewels. Then at least the price could be justified..

  18. Oh, for heaven's sake. Yes, let's crap up a classic style with "bling"..

The pattern on the vases are why people buy them...These are gaudy.
