A Vestibule? & Coral Pink & Help Me

1st dibs

As you enter my new house, off the foyer there is an area that has a coat closet, a linen closet, and then doors to the guest bedroom, the guest bath, and the study. It is square. Not a hallway...... is it called a vestibule? There is a pocket door to close off the entire guest suite. It has a very nondescript lighting fixture that I want to replace with something really fun and coral pink! Coral pink fixtures are few and far between.

The one above sold on 1st dibs already for $$$$. Here are some more ideas.

Visual Comforts Kate Spade Cavanagh Lantern

Shades of Light Lotus Flower

Sazerac Stitches Loa Carousel

I like this but it's too big -

Nordic Chandelier

I like this but pricey -

Mitzi Leigh Lantern

Another idea is to find a vintage or new lantern and paint it coral pink myself. Do you like any of these or have an idea on a pagoda style lighting fixture I could paint? This is a spot I can just have some fun.

I also love those little round clear bulbs in the Kate Spade fixture - more fun than chandelier bulbs.

P.S. I meant to mention that I was saddened to receive an email about Wisteria going out of business after 19 years. Yet another victim of the pandemic. It was a very well curated collection and I will miss it. I so fear that when we emerge from this we will be left with chain stores and chain restaurants. There won't be any reason to go out.

  1. I must be the earliest riser. I love the idea of a pink Chinoiserie chandelier in your foyer. How about this one from Ballard? It's on sale. You could paint it.

    1. That's funny - I have been eyeing that for another spot, but didn't like the color. That's a wonderful idea.

    2. Oooh, I love that one! I'd definitely find one that you like, regardless of color, and paint it. It's so easy, and gives you a one of a kind fixture. Such a custom touch! To be honest, I have done that throughout my house. I buy fixtures for pennies on the dollar at the Habitat for Humanity store, give them a paint job and have a custom fixture.

    3. I would love to know what paint you prefer and do you use spray or brush? Thank you!

    4. myperfectcolor.com sells spray paint that is color matched to any number of paint brands. It's an awesome service and I use it all the time!

    5. Beth, I've used everything from chalk paint to craft paint to spray paint. All have been successful. I guess it depends on the effect you want. For a laquered look I'd probably use a spray paint like Rustoleum. Depending on the fixture you may want to spray it with a white primer to get a truer color. Like, if you were painting a black fixture. It may take too many coats to get a light color if you don't prime.

    6. I’ve done the same thing all over my house. The beautiful fixture in my guest room cost me a whopping $5 from the reStore. I painted it to create patina with antique gold and toothbrush spattered highlights with mixed colors — reds, browns, blacks — from my craft drawer. It’s perfect and NOBODY can tell it’s a steal. Best wishes!

    7. Rooskie Dooskie - Thanks for the tips. I have always liked Rustoleum.

  3. My vote is for Kate Spade or Mitzi Leigh....Wow! that is so sad about Wisteria. I had no idea. I have many Wisteria purchases in my home.

    1. I love both of those and yes, a real shame about Wisteria. And we have not seen the end of businesses we love succumbing.

  4. Of the ones you posted I like the Shades of Light the best... it resonates with me as a true coral and it has pop. Have you checked out Colleen and Company? Not inexpensive but considering your scores at HG lately.... ;)
The other thing I’m thinking is a vintage tole sprayed in high gloss.

    1. Yes, the Shades of Light one is a great color, comes in two sizes, and is very inexpensive. And so unique. I love Colleen and Company but I am buying this house all by myself and trying to be a good girl. LOL

  5. Will you be replacing the foyer fixture?
I love the Shades of Light Lotus Flower for the Vestibule and then you could do a lantern of some sort in the foyer.
I too was caught off guard about Wisteria; sad.

I know you wanted something like that elsewhere but it's too divine not to use again. Spray it with Crylon in any color you want it should be perfect.

    2. I love this but may be too grand for the vestibule. It would be great in the study, but when you live in the tropics you realize how essential ceiling fans are.

I love the Chinoiserie style light for that area and in general. So many well priced choices out there and you can't go wrong with painting it yourself. I've done it many a time--both hand painted and sprayed. Works great just be sure to tape well all the areas you want to protect.

    2. Yes - I actually have this over my kitchen island with the Ballard wicker shades and I really like it. Maybe too tall for a hallway but it really is a great piece and I do think it could easily be painted.

    3. Thanks - I will measure more next week after I close.

  9. I love the picture of the Shades of Light fixture. I have painted several light fixtures and have almost always been happy with the result. I do think this is one area where if you splurge on something you really love you are always happy.

  14. You might check out Shades of Light's smaller bamboo lantern, if the one Delta posted is too big for the space. I have it in my turquoise Chinoiserie dressing room, but my husband spray painted it fire engine red for me. I have another, vintage tole bamboo chandelier in the bedroom that he spray painted turquoise. You can see them in my Apartment Therapy Home Tour at the link in my name. I'm a huge fan of customizing light fixtures!

    1. Good points - I want a tropical vibe without going too nuts and that would be a good spot for that.

  16. I like the Kate Spade and the Mitzi. But I like Ballard's Aya the best! Rustoleum does make a coral spray paint. The Ballard is cheaper than most of the ones above (I think!). If you paint it yourself, you could spray the canopy, too like the one from lstDibs. The Lotus is different, looks like a burlesque fan dancer! But I fear it would be a huge dust magnet—and would require a ladder which I now try to avoid!

I was saddened to hear about Wisteria. I bought several things from them including my favorite: the black and white bone inlay chest. I agree with your assessment that the new normal will be much, much less.

    1. As to the ladder, I have a wonderful collection of high end cleaning tools you might remember from my laundry room reveal. They are all German, wood handled, with lambswool, ostrich feathers, and boar bristles. I have several with very long handles eliminating the ladder requirement for dusting.

      Delete
    2. I am glad to be reminded that you have tall tools at the ready and don't need to use ladders! Having 10-foot ceilings and be a self pronounced ardent cleaner and soon to be living alone kinda' worried me!!! My husband of 43 years is 6'5" with almost 39" arms——terrible to find long enough sleeves for the fella', but he is my long-handled extension! Particularly now that he's retired, he's the keeper clear of tall things. I know whatever light you pick for this area will be unique and charming. Can't wait to see it all come together.

    3. Thanks. Yes, and some areas are 12 foot ceilings. But I am prepared.

  18. I'm seeing something Dorothy Draper. Its nice to have some drama in a small Walk-thru space. Play with scale and install the biggest ceiling medallion that will fit (gold leaf of course). Definitely the Aya Pagoda fixture, paint it coral. The walls should be turquoise blue and squeak in a black pinstripe to ground it all. A large blanc-de-chin statue of Guan Yin would be nice too.
Sorry to hear about Wisteria. They did have a nicely curated collection.

    3. Mr Sterling - Yes, I love drama in a small space. This sounds wonderful. And the Dorothy Draper influence would remind me of many family vacations at the Greenbrier.
