Dream Chinoiserie Kitchen

via At Home in Arkansas

I am a sucker for a white kitchen and this one is stunning. I love it all, but especially the lucite barstools and the blue and white Chinese porcelain. The blue and white ginger jar and pair of vases are great examples of how to incorporate  Chinoiserie in your own kitchen.

Chinoiserie DIY

Check out this inspired idea. Paint the edge of a door with a pop of color - here a fluorescent hot pink, a great contrast to this pale blue, white, and gold Chinoiserie bedroom.

Orange & Chinoiserie

With autumn around the corner, I love thinking about ways to add orange Chinoiserie touches to my home. Here is some inspiration.

Baskets & Chinoiserie

Summer Thornton - House Beautiful

Baskets are a great way to add a causal note, as well as functionality,  to a Chinoiserie entryway with lots of blue and white Chinese porcelain.

The Chinoiserie Entry

Jill Goldberg - New England Home
If you love color and Chinoiserie, this entry is one for you. The walls are covered in a blue Phillip Jeffries grasscloth. The stair runner is leopard. A Bernhardt leather bench is upholstered in spring leaf green. An Osborne & Little fabric covers the colorful bolster. A sea urchin sculpture is a fanciful note. Chinoiserie elements include a beautiful pagoda mirror with bells and a black and white dragon lamp whose lampshade echoes the green of the bench.

Faux Bois & Chinoiserie

Andrew Raquet

A common conundrum is what patterns combine well with Chinoiserie wallpaper and fabrics. A favorite of mine is faux bois (from the French for false wood). Its subtle organic quality makes it a perfect choice as shown in this gorgeous Chinoiserie dining room by Andrew Raquet with its Gracie wallpaper and Quadrille's faux bois - Alan Campbell's Meloire Reverse on the chairs. Here is another shot of this wonderful room.

Let's look at some other ways designers have combined the fanciful faux bois with the fanciful Chinoiserie.

Michael S. Smith - Chinoiserie wallpaper and pagodas with a faux bois table

Cecilie Starin Design - Chinese screen and a faux bois chair

Biggs Powell - faux bois mirror and a pair of Chinoiserie lamps

Kristen Panitch - House Beautiful - Chinoiserie wallpaper and faux bois mirror

Benjamin Dhong - House Beautiful - Cole & Son wallpaper Nuvole Storm and entwined dolphins mirror combined with a faux bois table

I was delighted to find this lovely Dransfield and Ross faux bois linen pillow at HomeGoods recently -

The Chinoiserie Dressing Room

Maya Nairn home in Austin - Domino
I have posted on many dressing rooms with Chinoiserie style, but this has become an instant favorite. I'd love to see other shots of it, but I am loving the -

*Chinoiserie wallpaper
*Coral bench
*Marble floor

The hand painted Chinoiserie wallpaper is from Richard Holton of Holton Arts. I don't think there is a better spot in the home to use a hand painted Chinoiserie wallpaper than a woman's dressing room. It is much more cost effective, with a smaller space to deal with, and can be used on just one wall. It is also a great room to go unabashedly feminine, regardless of the aesthetic of the rest of your abode.

The Chinoiserie Bathroom

Shophouse Design
I have posted about hundreds of bathrooms and powder rooms, but this is definitely one that everyone loves and keeps asking about. The wallpaper is Cole & Son Fontainebleau, a real stunner, and perfect here juxtaposed against an all white bathroom.

This wallpaper depicts a wonderfully exuberant ‘tree of life,' inspired by the Palace of Fontainebleau outside Paris. Comprising leafy stems upon which are perched a flock of exotic and colourful birds, this wallpaper design is presented in two colourways of rose pinks on duck egg and fuchsia and emerald greens on a neutral ground.

Here it is in the other color way -

A Chinoiserie Vignette

Lisa Fines - House Beautiful
I happened upon this photo yesterday and was struck again by how much I like it. A favorite de Gournay elephant paper is paired with an Anglo - Indian bench covered in velvet and a large blue and white ginger jar. I love finding ginger jars large enough to use on the floor. As you might imagine, I use them just about everywhere in my house.

Robin's Egg Blue

Phoebe Howard - Southern Accents

Robin's egg blue is a favorite color of mine and it combines so beautifully with Chinoiserie. Here Phoebe Howard uses it masterfully with blue and white Chinoiserie panels, chairs, and rug, but in deeper blues to really pop. Note too how she picked mirrored sconces to reflect the Chinoiserie panels and how she carried the robin's egg blue onto the moldings at the ceiling.

Here is another example of robin's egg blue I adore - Miles Redd's iconic NYC front door - I wish this were a paint color one could buy but he hand mixed it. This would be a great choice for so many houses.

The Chinoiserie Bedroom - Alexa Hampton

Alexa Hampton - Kips Bay Decorator Show House - So Haute
I am in love with this cozy elegant bedroom by Alexa Hampton. Can you find the Chinoiserie elements? I spot a Chinese screen, a Chinese gourd lamp, Greek key pillow shams, and blanc de Chine figures on the bedside table. To me, there is nothing nicer in a bedroom than a canopy bed - I have two in my home. I love the lacquered charcoal walls and silver ceiling. Dark lacquered walls were a signature of her dad Mark Hampton. BTW, his book Mark Hampton on Decorating is to me one of the best books on interior design of all time.

I tend to be very symmetrical in my tastes and I'm not sure I adore the mix of bedside tables and lamps. I tend to favor not matching the bedside tables, but using a matched pair of lamps. This is just a matter of personal preference of course. All in all, this is a stunning bedroom with a great English country vibe made all the better with its views of the Manhattan skyline.

The Chinoiserie Dining Room

Taylor & Taylor
This clicks off so many of the elements I love in a dining room -

*Blue and white palette
*Chinese Chippendale chairs - love the distressing on these
*Grasscloth on the walls
*Dramatic oversized chandelier - love the brass finish
*Abstract modern piece of art

I am quite not as enthused about the styling -  I would not have chosen the lamps or pieces on the sideboard or the veggies on the table. I used a pair of these Arterior's lamps in a client's dining room and I think they would be a great choice.

An astute follower commented that the art looks to be by Hunt Slonem - the above is a painting by Slonem - Untitled/Cockatoos 2012 that appears to be from the same collection that I found on 1stdibs.

Green Velvet

Alberto Pinto - Architectural Digest
Blue and white Chinese porcelain is mounted here on green velvet walls. The chairs are Russian, the sofa is Italian. Green velvet, whether on walls, sofas, or pillows, combines beautifully with blue and white Chinese porcelain.

Here are two other lovely examples of combining green velvet walls with blue and white Chinese porcelain.
