Velvet and Chinoiserie

I can't imagine that there is a more delicious combination than velvet and Chinoiserie. I have a wonderful club chair in my living room in need of reupholstering. I have a vision of it in a sumptuous velvet in a soft, unusual color like a lavender or gray perhaps.

I adore mohair velvet, but my chair needs about 8 or 9 yards and this would get awfully pricey. I love silk velvet, but probably not the best choice for my favorite reading chair. Cotton or linen velvets are great choices. I did a bit of skulking on eBay last night, and will head out today to some fabric haunts. Do any of you have any favorite velvets?

  1. I love this feature! I bought a raspberry cotton velvet recently to put on a little antique French tufted chair. It will be really sweet, I hope. I'd love to know your velvet sources, if you'd care to share! I had to go to fabric row in Philly for mine (I'm in Florida)!

  9. Velvet is my favorite fabric, informed by my favorite movie (National, not Blue). Chinoiserie is a new appetite, so this seemed written for me. Cotton is what is routinely in my budget, but if I find one with a good color and a decent nap, I just sort of abuse it to build it's character. A little stonewash, a little sun dry, a little left underneath a full laundry basket, and suddenly it's faded just so and crushed here and there. It also seems less likely to leave a butt print after that mistreatment, if I use it on a seat, so there's that. Beautiful post, I can't stop staring.

  12. Wow these pictures are like an early Xmas present! So beautiful. And I do love my Stubbs & Wootens - the last pair I bought are pink linen with neon yellow skulls - and yet I get conpoliments constantly when I wear them! They're getting older so I treat them with much tenderness and respect...
