Creating Drama with Chinese Porcelain

Instant Chinoiserie drama can be created with the addition to your home of oversized Chinese porcelain pieces. Perfect spots are an entry like this gorgeous Charlotte Moss example above, a mantle or fireplace, or a dining room table. Pedestals add to the impact. These need not be antiques or fine pieces-the pair in front of my family room fireplace were $60 for the pair from Pier One Imports.

  1. A pair are on my want list right up at the top.$60 dollars at pier one. will have to check them out. Lillian August have some I have been eyeing for a while. I want the really large ones like Carolyne Roehm image. Love yours.

  2. Have you ever seen Sargent's painting "The Daughters of Edward Darley Boit"? I have been in LOVE with giant porcelain vases ever since I saw them in that painting(you can see it here)!

I remember learning (in art history, a while ago) that they were all the rage at one time, a status symbol of culture among the very wealthy, due to the cost and difficulty of acquiring and transporting them! Anyway, this reminded me of that.

Also, you have fantastic obelisks! Are they covered in shells?

  4. You have such a beautiful collection in your home! The Kensington Palace example is stunning. I'm also really a fan of the first pic by Moss - the way the branches frame the room, tree like, but without being too woodsy in a formal setting (if woodsy is a word).

  9. Lauren-I love that painting and never miss seeing it when I am in Boston. Yes, the obelisks are all covered in seashells-I think they are wonderful. I love the mix of seashells and Chinese porcelain and use it elsewhere in my home.
